I've done some research and need to start contributing. Don't have an account

My current salary is over the Roth limit. However my 2018 tax return will be well below since I started my new job in October and I was unemployed a few months.

Do I need to backdoor this year or can I just set up the Roth? Is vanguard the best site to start on?

Based on your 2018 earnings not salary. You can just contribute to the Roth IRA as long as your AGI doesn’t phase out. Otherwise, contribute to a Traditional IRA and then backdoor if you’d like.
