Disputing a charge on credit card
I've got a situation and I'm not sure it would work with disputing a charge on a credit card.

I booked a cabin for vacation, and unbeknownst to me, the rental company sold the cabin and tried to stick me in another, lesser cabin. I accidentally found out while perusing their website, and now I want my money back. They are trying to keep half my deposit, which I don't feel is right/fair.

What are my options? The only things I'm seeing are eating the expense, or trying to call my credit company. Thanks in advance.

Definitely call the CC company. You fill out a form, provide as many specifics as possible (receipt, rental agreement, etc). CC company may require more info.

Call your credit card issuer ASAP. Explain the bait and switch situation. If you're in good standing with your credit card issuer and haven't made numerous other complaints, they will likely put a hold on your reservation deposit while they pursue your complaint with the rental company. Odds are you'll get the entire deposit amount refunded if the rental company won't put you in the unit you initially reserved.

In my lifetime I've only disputed 2 or 3 charges that I made that I wanted reversed due to an issue with the merchant and the credit card company eventually issued a full refund for ALL of those charges.

Thanks, I've never had to do anything like this before.

Another question-would I contact Visa, or USAA (the bank that issued the card)?

Contact the number on the back of the card. In your case it should be USAA

You also need to dispute the charge in writing. Calling will get the ball rolling and most likely take care of the issue but to preserve your rights in the future you need to send something in writing! Most people skip that part.

Exercise Your Rights
To take advantage of the law's consumer protections, you must: write to the creditor at the address given for "billing inquiries," not the address for sending your payments, and include your name, address, account number, and a description of the billing error. Use our sample letter. send your letter so that it reaches the creditor within 60 days after the first bill with the error was mailed to you. It’s a good idea to send your letter by certified mail; ask for a return receipt so you have proof of what the creditor received. Include copies (not originals) of sales slips or other documents that support your position. Keep a copy of your dispute letter. The creditor must acknowledge your complaint, in writing, within 30 days after receiving it, unless the problem has been resolved. The creditor must resolve the dispute within two billing cycles (but not more than 90 days) after getting your letter.

I've disputed charges a few times and I never had to submit anything in writing. Won every time.

Most cc companies just have a form to fill out online to dispute the charges.

I also have never done anything in writing and won, but it's always been under a hundred bucks. Also has occurred probably once every couple years or so fwiw.
