I keep getting invitations from them. They say the card is accepted at 97% of the merchants that accept Visa and MC.

Worth getting one?

I got the Discover IT card right after graduation and I am a fan. I haven't had a place not take Discover since I have had it. They offer 5% cash back on select purchases that change each quarter. I also like that they show my credit score with each bill.

Eh, it is a solid card for sure but there are better options.

The Chase Freedom card is effectively the same as the Discover IT but can eventually be paired with their UR partners

For me, it is only worth it from July 1st through end of September as that is when they do 5% cash back on restaurants.

All the rest of the year I already have cards that give me 5% back on those categories all the time.

Decent card for cash back, especially if you register for the quarterly special 5 percetnt on certain categories (department stores, gas, restaurants, etc). Otherwise, it pays 1 percent, others pay more these days.

But you can trade your cashback dollars for gift cards worth more than you pay. For example, you pay $80 in cash back credits and get $100 gift card to Lands End. Several merchants offer similar deals via the Discover website,

Almost everyone in the US takes it these days. I did have an upscale restaurant not take it recently, but that was the first reject in years. Hurt too, because it was 5 percent season.

For a long time it was my go to card, and for a cash back card, it's excellent.

However, in the past couple years I started playing the points game, and there's more value in points than cash back, assuming you like to travel.

This gets discussed a lot but I don't think that is an absolute truth. i'm able to get more free travel using cash back than through points systems from my personal experience. For me, cashback rewards combined with rewards from airlines/hotels directly through their usage programs yield much more.

I think if you were only looking at the 1% cashback days, you'd be right. At worst every purchase I make I get 2.5% cashback on right now. At best, I get 6%. For the most part I average around 3-4% for all purchases across all categories. It all adds up rather quickly for my family.

It is the only card I have ever had. Never had any issues with them at all and their customer service is pretty amazing.

I like the cash back incentives.

Discover

They declined me after sending me IT card invitations at least once a week for months. Never been late on a payment on any credit account. Only reason they gave for declination was high utilization percentage relative to my available credit at the time. Pissed me off that they had been sending so many invitation offers only to decline me and put an extra useless inquiry on my report. Never had any other CC company decline me or even turn down a credit limit increase request. Their rewards offers weren't any better than my existing cards, just wanted to take advantage of 0% on balance transfers that the Discover offer advertised so I could pay off other cards with higher interest rate. Everything that comes in the mail from Discover now goes straight into the trash without even looking at it.

Citi Double Cash is my go to for everyday purchases, Chase Freedom for the revolving 5% categories, and Amex Blue Cash Pref for their higher cash back categories (gas, grocery stores, dept stores).

Have you looked at a 2.5% unlimited cashback card? What about a 5% cashback gas card?

Who offers those? I haven't seen higher than 2% anywhere on unlimited cash back and only times I've ever seen 5% on gas was for cards with the revolving 5% categories

Yes. The benefits aren't as great as they were a few years ago (compared to other cards). But still a good card, 1% on everything, 5% on quarterly categories (currently gas, next is Amazon and other online retailers). I've only had a few places not accept it

2.5% - LINK
The catch is this one requires a USAA checking acct and one $1k+ electronic deposit from an outside financial institution monthly.

5% gas:LINK

I have a 5% gas caschback from Penfed but i don't think it is open to new holders anymore. The 5% being a VISA is nice because you can use it at Costco too.

It's nice that they do (or did) cashback match the first year so you get double cash back. So for example, right now you'd effectively getting 10% off at bars & restaurants which is huge. Also their Discover Deals is the best cashback online portal I've ever had, 5-10% at most online retailers not named Amazon. No huge signup bonus but no annual fee either so why not.

First card I got when I got out of college. Great Customer Service compare to other cards, never had a problem with merchants not accepting. I've used in Europe and Canada.

I have the Discover IT as well. First card I ever got at 18 with about an $800 limit. I still carry it and use it, especially on the revolving 5% cash back.

I have the basic card and I pay it off usually everymonth - do get options for other cards. I decided that I only use the chase united card. I've never had a amexp.
A few years back I created a spread sheet and was shocked at my cc debt - $12,000. without any large purchases etc. I said never again - as I paid them off I cut them up.
