Has anyone here purchased digital property? I have an old college buddy swearing he’s making bank buying digital property. Maybe I’m just behind the times I just don’t understand the whole concept.

There are plenty of illogical things on which people spend their money. That’s probably the most important thing to remember about anything dealing with the metaverse.

He is buying NFTs for video games. I'm sure he will make money from them when the games launch, but it's a long play to make money.

Maybe land in metaverse projects? It is quite a risk as there are so many projects who knows which one will last

If I ever play the lottery and win big $, I may buy some Dutch tulip NFTs.

Wonder how much this guy could sell for right now.

Want to be Snoop Dogg’s neighbor in the metaverse? It could cost you about $450,000. That’s how much one NFT collector spent on Friday, Dec. 3rd, to own a plot of virtual land in the Snoopverse — an interactive world the rapper is developing in The Sandbox, an Ethereum-based platform for creating and monetizing online hangout spaces and gaming experiences.

I guess I'm either too old or too stupid, or both, to understand this...

Not sure this is the same thing, but I saw this tweet earlier today: LINK
quote:

One buyer purchased a Snoop Dog curated NFT in early April for about $32,000 worth of the cryptocurrency ether. It's now up for auction, with an asking price of $25.5 million.

The highest current bid is for 0.0743 ether—about $210.

Same thing happened to the person that bought a NFT of the Twitter creator guy’s first tweet, paid a $ million+ for it, expected it to sell at auction for $29 million, got $200 bucks.

He should be happy. That’s $199.99 more than I would have given him for it.

Seth Green was developing a new show based off of some NFTs he bought but then someone phished him and stole the NFTs. Frankly I don’t see how that will keep him from producing the show but he seems to think it will.

My suggestion to anyone getting into this stuff is to learn the basics of copyright law and understand exactly what it is that you are purchasing in the first place. For example, the BAYC terms and conditions I just read claim to transfer ownership of the “NFT” it does not appear to transfer the copyright. Not even an exclusive license. Buyer beware. Big ole can of worms gonna open on all of this NFT biz IMO.

I’m not an attorney, don’t play one on TV and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But if a theft took place and the thief tried to use his possession of the stolen property to enforce a copyright claim, wouldn’t he basically be driving up to the local FBI office with a sign saying “Arrest me… I’m stoopid” around his neck???

But I freely admit that I know nothing about NFTs (and not too bothered that I don’t ).

I really don't know what kind of priority law enforcement will give to recovery of non-fungible tokens. And in many cases assume the perp is overseas. I don't see how the perp could enforce a copyright claim, certainly not under US law. They could have control of the token but have zero rights to the image and certainly have no right to transfer the copyright or grant any licenses to use the image.
