So I got a hike in my mortgage payment due to some escrow adjustments likely due to not filing my for my homestead exemption.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I bought my home spring 2019 and didn't realize I had to re file this year. I talked with the TA office here in BR and will go in the next week to file. My question is can I expect any money back once I get this filed?

In NOLA they will give you back the extra you paid due to no homestead being filed if it could have been filed. I would assume it’s like that state wide. It will take a while but it will come eventually. Took about 5 months from my filing to get the check.

One more thing, I went in person and the city employee walked me through the affidavit you file to show that you were eligible for homestead in the previous year. Make sure you don’t just file the homestead exemption and not some additional paperwork that is likely required to receive the credit.

HS is so stupid. I closed on my current house in Nov and missed the cut off. Had to pay an extra $250 per month the next year. Was pissed.

I've never had to refile homestead exemption after I did it the first time. Been the same for all 3 homes I've owned between Jefferson and St Tammany.

I had something similar on my first house, but it was an administrative error. You shouldn't need to refile, you may want to make sure they don't have you registered for a HE on another property and thought they needed to remove it.

In regards to what happens to the extra money your mortgage company is collecting, they will often readjust those figures when they receive the correct info, or after they make the payments and see they were over collecting. Some companies will either cut you a check immediately, or ask if you want to apply the overpayment directly to principal.

Yeah, I live in GA and filed the year of purchase and never again. Annually sounds stupidly unnecessary.

In Jefferson Parish I have seen them be very generous to people who file late if they can show they were entitled to it. Give it a try.

The house I purchased inGA had homestead fall off bc the sellers had moved houses and filed on that house before I purchased and closed. We closed after the cutoff and I got stuffed with the hike in payment for 2019.

Once you file homestead keep the paperwork and get over to your current lender so they can re-adjust your monthly payment. You will get a check back from tax office but it will be awhile. You only have to file homestead once

Yes in New Orleans they will give you your money back but only in October.

Twice in the years after Katrina, Chase overpaid on my property tax. I had to request a refund and was told by the city they do all refunds in October. Both times I got a check around Halloween.
