My son started working over this past summer and into the school year. He received his W2 in the mail and he had federal and state tax withheld. Since my wife and I claim him on our return, how does he handle receiving his refund? He only made a few thousand dollars so definitely under the minimum. Shouldn’t he go back to his employer and adjust his W4 so he doesn’t have any tax withheld and so he wouldn’t have to file a return next year also?

Has to file his own return or be included on yours if you want a refund. It would most likely be better to file his own.

He just doesn't get his exemption. He still needs to file his return and he'll get his refund.

No it wouldn't because if he does they can't take his credit since he's still in school.

if he made over a certain amount (~6K) he could file his own taxes and you can still claim him

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to think about tax like this but it seems like I remember a box or something on HIS tax return that would need to be checked so that my wife and I would still be allowed to claim him and still be able to receive all of our credits. Am I just dreaming this up or does anyone know the answer to this?

I mean it depends on the situation but generally the only difference would be he gets taxed at lower rates since he wouldn’t be getting his parents rates. They still get to claim him

He didn’t make that much. His federal was a little over $200 and State was about $70. I know this isn’t much but, to a high school kid that’s quite a few tanks of gas.

Right. He'll have to waive his exemption on his return and say that you're claiming him. Then you'll claim him on your return through his name, SS number and such. It's not hard, the forms will take you right through it.

The 6k limit only has to do with whether he is required to file his own return or not

He will put 0 for exemptions if you are claiming him. So there’s a box you do not check on his return

Should he go ahead and redo his W4 at work so that no tax is withheld this year? That way he doesn’t have to worry about filing a return.

My step dad used to use the phone thing to file mine when I was in high school.
