Have about $20k from an old employer 401k that has just been sitting in a rollover IRA account. It’s a target retirement fund with 8.8% rate of return. Thinking about selling it to buy about 10 shares of Amazon. Already talked to Vanguard and there are no penalties or fees for doing this. Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with the Amazon stock. But depends on how old you are and how much else you have in your other retirement accounts.
I'm about 18% Amazon, but that wasn't by design. It's just grown "too much."

It's a very simple process and I just did it a couple of weeks ago.

Open a Traditional IRA with Vanguard. Go through the Withdraw/Rollover process with whoever your 401k is through, make sure all you information is correct and your account # is on the check, and wait about a week. Vanguard will deposit your funds into a Money Market account at which time you can allocate however you would like be that index funds, individual stocks, etc.

Very easy.

The target retirement fund should have lower risk than Amazon. Just bear in mind there's no guarantee Amazon will continue to outperform no matter what it did previously.

Slight Hijack.

I'm in the process of rolling over two old 401k's into my newly created Vanguard account.

Was planning on putting 90% into a few of their funds, and the remaining 10% over a few different stocks.

Any suggestions on Vanguard funds for the 90%?

TIA

Vtsax or vtsmx, depending on how much you're rolling over

If I'm not mistaken, Admirals Shares only made sense if you were putting more than $10k in correct?

Depends on the fund, in this case VTSAX Admiral requires $10k. Wellington Admiral requires $50k.

Typically when I see/hear comments like this it is the top of the market.

Why so many downvotes? I just turned 33 with about $140k in other retirement accounts. This would be lagniappe.

You might as well be me.

I am same age, and last summer I took about 40k that was in my 401k from my first job out of college, rolled it into an IRA, and then used about 50% of it to by Amazon. This was when the price was about $1100. Great decision so far, and about every month I tell my wife how it's doing and her same comment every time is "I need to get in on that".

Sounds like we are both in similar situations financially, as I have about 175-180k saved in my various retirement accounts right now.
