Company Car v. Stipend

I don't have the specifics yet, but I know I will have the option between a stipend or a company car. From what I hear companies almost always offer a better deal with the car vs giving you the cash(meaning the amount they spend on the company car is more than the stipend). Anyone have experience with it?

I've had company cars or mileage reimbursement (not a monthly stipend). Company car was always a better deal. Gas price volatility alone makes a stipend more risky unless you have full faith the employer is going to be fair to you in a timely manner.
You may not get the vehicle of your choice, but that's trivial compared to saving $, no maintenance cost, car replacement at certain mileage, etc.

I've got a car allowance now w/mileage reimbursement and I'd kill for the option to have a company car. I've put tons of miles on my personal vehicle for work. Also, I'm responsible for insurance and repairs out of the car allowance. I'm not getting ripped off, but our system puts the burden on me and my property as opposed to my employer. I'd trade in a second.

i have a company vehicle with company gas and insurance as well. It is awesome. maintenance and everything is there problem.
My last job gave me an allowance and it was ok because my truck was already paid for but it started to get expensive after all the repairs for the high mileage.
Most guys with an allowance will automatically go and buy something new or at least get a note and spend most if not all of their allowance on it. If you can stay reasonable and put money away each month for repairs and such then you can make some money on the side. If not just go with the company vehicle.
Will you be able to use the company vehicle for personal use?

My husband has always had a company car. It is by far the best option. Just keep good records. Lease value + is added to his compensation. We have to file a 2106 on taxes to deduct the business miles. We pay taxes on the personal miles.

I have had both and if you are looking at dollars alone the company car is the way to go- if you care what you drive and dollars are not that important take the allowance

I had a company car and I think I would have rather have had the stipend. My car cost me 140/pay check so almost 300/month. with the miles I drove I would have been better off plus i could have bought a new ride

My company has a written policy that company vehicle are not to be used for personal mileage. In the past it was kind of understood that it would be OK to use it for personal purposes. Recently there has been some rumbling about cars not be allowed for personal use any more.
So be sure to make sure about this detail.

i've been having a co. car for about 3 years, nissan ultima and now a ford escape. if i don't take the car i receive an allowance of about $500/mo. but i'm taxed on the allowance. i can use the vehicle for personal use - i have to estimate the miles for business vs personal. everything is pd for. with the allowance i still receive a gas card and oil changes but thats it. i did see a nice chevy 4 door pickup that made me jealous today - but i remembered that my car is free.

I take the stipend and gas card. The stipend is more than my note, plus why not let them pay for something that you have to own anyway?? Even if you put a lot of miles on it, then just drive it until the wheels fall off, you should be able to make it out last a 4 or 5 year note.

Mine included that but I still had to pay a fee per pay check for use

Thanks for the advice, looks like I will have to wait to get more details and I will report back. Problem is I'd like to have a truck and a sports car, cause im a car guy. I think the company cars are usually SUV's but might be able to get them to go with a 4-door truck, then i can buy a car on my own.

I like the deal I get. They give me $600/month (after taxes) and pay for all my gas. My car has been paid off for a couple of years so I just have to pay $100 for insurance and any repairs.
