The military would be a good option if it was just 3years. They(Army at least) throw big bonuses at specialized people the end to keep them. I think MD's have to be in for 8 if they pay for the school. I may be totally wrong.

Dentists may have a different set up too.

A friend is about to take out almost $400,000 in student loans for medical school. He also has $50,000 or so from undergrad.

Dude needs to get in-state med school...

Yes they are. They have 3 and 4 year scholarships which pay all tuition + about 2k a month to live off of. You have to work for them and go wherever they want you to for as many years as they paid for your schooling. Air force is known to be the best one. It is worth it if you go to a private school and dont mind moving wherever they want you..

If you go to an in state school it's better to just take on the loans (usually ~200k less in debt) and start making money on your own.. Army dentists usually make like 75k while gettin loan repayment

Used the cash to buy a car when mine went out. This is what is wrong with fricking student loans. You shouldn't be able to buy a car with student loans

Was it wrong? I still use that car today with 170K miles. It was at a lower interest rate than I could get through an auto lender; I couldn't get a loan from a bank because even though I had an offer letter with a salary, the job start date was more than 3 months away. And the student loan interest was tax deductible (auto loan would not be).

Maybe the Army isn't so bad after all.

Well I could've paid it off by now if I wanted, but I figured I'd have a mortgage (or another car loan at some point) at a higher interest rate than that at some point. My mortgage interest rate is higher, so smarter to pay that off. Also not paying it off, gave me more cash to put down. I put down 20% and no PMI. That PMI I'd be paying of $50/month now can off set my student loan payment by $50.

How many of you made it through without them?
Thank God for TOPS. Had about 35k in grad school loans but paid that off quickly. Wife's parents paid for both her degrees luckily.
