My Volvo S60 is needing an engine replacement after 4.5 yrs and 76k mi. Thankfully, it’s paid for and I bought GEICO’s mechanical breakdown coverage when I purchased the car with 7300 mi (former dealer loan car). GEICO is considering totaling the car. Disappointing because I was looking forward to a couple of years with no car payment.

First of all, I can not recommend the mechanical breakdown insurance enough. I would have been screwed without it. At $80/yr, it’s a bargain over an extended warranty.

I’m looking at a small SUV: Honda CRV, GMC Terrain, Cadillac XT4, Jeep Compass, Buick Envision, Volvo XC40. I would not be opposed to another S60 loaner if the dealer gave me a good deal.

I’d love to hear the board’s thoughts on which of these is the best purchase. After what’s happened to my vehicle and how helpful the MBI has been, I will be purchasing a car with less than 15k miles.

Never heard of mechanical breakdown insurance. Sounds like a decent deal.

Why not buy your next vehicle from an individual rather than a dealership? The individual doesn't have overhead and commissions to pay like the dealership does so you'll get a better deal. And presumably you'll get a fair payout from the insurance company so you can just pay cash for it without having the carnote. Get the same mechanical breakdown insurance and you'll be good to go.

I'd say skip the Cadillac and Volvo because those are more expensive to have work done on compared to domestic makes. Personally, I'd go with the Jeep or Honda since they have a reputation for being dependable and are easy for mechanics to work on. Honda's also have good re-sale value so keep that in mind too.

I had mechanical breakdown but then GEICO raised rates dramatically and it didn’t make sense to stay.

Honda no question. We owned an 2010 GMC terrain, it was garbage.

Not sure yet. It started burning through oil quickly. Went from needing oil every 10k to every 3k. Hoping they decide to fix it.

I’ll switch over to Progressive. They have it, too.

I’ve seen the CX-5 is highly rated but it drives me crazy when they make an infotainment panel that looks like they just shoved an iPad mini into the top of the dashboard or it looks like they just glued one to the front of it.

Car stereo and info system is important to me. I could care less about a sunroof, heated seats, etc.

That is the legal term for “extended warranty” and what you will actually see on the contract.

Why would you consider another Volvo after the engine crapped out early on you?

Buy a used Chevy Impala- they depreciate quickly, but you get to reap the benefits of buying used. Just purchased a 2nd one from my wife's company that was a pool car. Reliable and good value. Sorry to hear about your S60, I almost bought one earlier this year and would still consider one. I love Swedish cars, I own 4 Saabs!

If you want something to last a while buy a Honda or Toyota. If that doesn't matter, get whichever one you want to be seen in I guess.

Plus 1 on the Sante Fe. I have a 2012 elantra that has not been in the shop once. Bought my wife a 2019 sante fe last year and she loves it. Great car for the price point.

Mazda CX-5 have been looking classy. Japanese made, real transmissions and their reliable 2.4L starting at 25k.
