Expecting Baby numero uno this year.
What should I expect a baby to cost per month? Assuming it's an average healthy baby without major complications.
Not including daycare. I know how much that will be!
Just trying to get ahead of the game and prepare myself lol. Thanks!

If you get enough diapers and clothing at showers and the baby is breast feeding, they are basically free in the first six months.
Then approximately eleventy billion a month after that.

is your wife breastfeeding? if so, that will reduce costs significantly
diapers will range in the $100-$150/month range for the first few months then slowly get less and less till you are about 1 box a month
newborns, if breastfed, are really not that expensive, as it's just diapers and clothes, which that just depends on your wife

We have a 6 month old that is breastfeeding. We have a nephew that is a year older than ours so we are given a lot of hand me downs. We have only had to buy 1 box of diapers so far. That is basically all we registered for.
Other than daycare ($220 /week) he is pretty cheap.

Yeah kids don't start getting expensive till they start eating real food and you have to buy them new clothes every 6 months
and if you are like most new parents, you will want them involved in literally everything, and that shite isn't cheap

Neither of our kids cost us any more in our budget after they were born, mostly because it forced us to stop eating out for dinner and going to happy hour so much. Other than daycare of course.
They start getting really expensive towards the end of elementary school. Extracurriculars have gotten out of control.

I forget some time this Money Board isn't just about shorting stocks/crypto and long term investments.
Then you see a post like this and it throws you for a loop.

WTF?
I just went back and looked at our Amazon subscribe and save.
~180 - 220 packs of Pampers delivered monthly (6-8 diapers a day) is $30.
You were using 36 diapers a day?!?
OP - outside of daycare the first year's expenses are minimal if breastfeeding.
Only significant jump was health insurance and those random doc visits for ear infections, etc. I'd put that around $250/mo for premiums and such. So around $300/mo total.
Good news is you're so tired you don't go out and you just move $300 from your entertainment/eating out to the kid.

maybe that number was high...it's been 5 years
for some reason I thought Pampers were more in the $45-$50/box range and we used like 3 boxes per month for the first 3 months
we are expecting #2 now, so I'm glad those numbers were high

I wouldn't worry so much about the day to day costs, as those will be minimal as other posters have said.
I'd focus on setting up an HSA (if you don't have one already) and an FSA for daycare expenses (whenever those start).
Additionally, you may want to see about starting a 529 account for your child. With the new tax law, I believe you can use funds within these to pay for K-12 private education expenses.

My daughter had an allergy to my wife’s breast milk and we switched her to a formula that was $10 per day. There’s also a convenience, at least as a Dad, to breastfeeding. Don’t count on it, but I’d encourage you to help your wife in establishing it and hope your kid does well with it. You’ll benefit financially and mentally in those first few months.

Formula is not that expensive... Costco has their own brand and it is $16 or so for a big box.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on the intercourse (great success)
Also, I can't help you at all.

Are you taking into account that Mama will want it to be purified, hydroelectric, organic, and sun kissed?

Target brand diapers are just as good as pampers
Find a good baby consignment store in a nice area and load up. Stuff there is usually a fraction of the price you’d pay at the store and usually in like new condition

Disagree. Pampers are all we have found that actually keeps his shite in his diaper. Luvs can go to hell.

Luvs and huggies are crap. But I found target brand to be the best. Each to their own
