Buying a used car...Any Pointers

I am looking to buy a used car or SUV.
I want to spend about 4-5k knowing that I will drive this thing into the ground.
Not much out there besides over 10 year old vehicles with a lot of miles.

When buying a used car always obtain a Carfax. Carfax will show if the vehicle has ever had a insurance claim for wrecks , floods, etc, in addition to listing service visits.

Cargurus.com is very helpful.

Gotta be honest I would try to wait another month and see what Congress does. They are just lighting money on fire and I think there is some traction for this “cash for clunkers 2.0” since GM and Ford are making ventilators and masks. If it happens there will be some interesting new car deals and a flooded used market.

I’m waiting on those Tellurides to start getting repoed. Hoping I can snag a good one with ~30,000 miles for around $26,000-$29,000.

4-5k
Obviously not much out there newer than 10 yrs old with low miles, that is how a vehicle’s value gets to that price range. Did u think before u posted this?

The previous program removed used car inventory because they were not "fuel efficient". Doing the same thing would reduce the used car market and increase the prices on used cars.

I always pull the Carfax, look for no wrecks, and a detailed maintenance report. Bought a high mileage GX470 for $7k, have put over 50k on it with no issues. At 240k now.
Also, with high mileage, ensure the timing belt has been replaced. That will be your big ticket maintenance item.

Wait until mid-summer. Prices will soon be dropping like a rock.

You think they just lit the trade ins on fire? No. It accelerated the used inventory and vehicles that were basically shite on wheels were destroyed. There was a surplus in used inventory that then “upgraded” the junkers

A well maintained Toyota/Lexus with that engine will run forever. A first generation Sequoia would be a good vehicle for 5 or 6 grand. Just make sure timing belt has been changed recently or offer 1k less.
Older Lexus ES and Toyota Camry is also a good bet.
The Lexus models overall are better maintained with my limited research.

I'd go honda civic or accord if you're going the car route. That's the only car i'd trust with high mileage. Try your best to get carfax records showing regular oil changes and routine maintenance. Good luck.

This, dont take a chance on anything else at that price point.

Incorrect. They either destroyed the clunkers or sent them south of the border. This caused less used car inventory to be available and increased the price point of used car inventory nationwide.
