Buying a 4Runner

Wife needs a new car as her 2004 Acura MDX has about 180k miles and starting to have issues. We're looking at the SR5 Premium, but wanted to get any one's thoughts on issues with the 4Runners or where we may be able to get a good deal on a certain trim level. Preferably 3 years used, but the difference between the used and the new aren't that much and it may make sense to buy new if she'll drive it for 10 years. Any thoughts?

I have a 2015 Trail Premium.
Overall, I wouldn’t buy one again. Unless you’re an outdoorsy type who needs to capabilities of the 4Runner, it offers little.
Being a Toyota, it holds its value Well.
But it:
Is small inside. If you have kids, find something more spacious inside.
Is way under-powered. The 4.0L V6 is not very inspiring.
Lacks refinement (doesn’t have smart-key, the remote start sucks arse, the infotainment is tiny and sucks).
Rides like a buggy and nosedives horribly with stock suspension under braking.

If she drove the old one for 15 I would go new if there's not much difference in price

We bought my wife a 2018 SR5 as well and I can’t stand it. Like someone already pointed out, it’s small inside and it’s not very comfortable. I dread when she wants to take it. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and would rather drive that then the 4Runner. The 4Runner drives like a truck and my truck drives like a car. I can’t wait until our lease is in in 2 years.

Seems like there are a lot of better options than the 4runner, especially for the price. Since you're coming from an Acura, the larger honda suv's are pretty nice I think and offer more bang for the buck.

4 runners are still body on frame production. This means that won't ride as smooth as crossovers (which make up most of what is called SUVs today).
Now having said that, if you are ok with that and want durability they are great.

If I were in the market for a new car right now I’d be looking at the Kia Telluride or the VW Atlas.
We have a 2018 Toyota Sequoia and I have been less than impressed with it

Just got a 2017 limited and love it. Much more room than the 2006 Pathfinder we moved up from. Much smoother ride too. I think folks who complain about the ride of 4Runners are just looking for something to complain about.

4Runners are awesome, but most people don’t understand that they are phenomenal off road vehicles, meaning the mall crawlers won’t like how it rides.

As I was reading the comments I wanted to suggest the Kia Telluride. That thing looks sweet.

This. The TRD Pro and the other off-Road configurations are great but if you’re expecting every bell and whistle on the inside go with a highlander. It has the extra seating and all the interior creature comforts.

My wife drives a Lexus, just so everyone knows

I’d look at the Lexus GX over the 4Runner due to interior refinement and ride quality.

I’d suggest getting one with KDSS.
I had a regular sr5. Traded it in for a trail premium with kdss and it is a very smooth ride. Night and day between the regular suspension system and KDSS. I love my 4runner but I don’t have any kids so I don’t need more room.

This was key to my post above.
When I bought the 4Runner, I didn’t have kids. If you have kids, especially in car seats, try putting car seats in backseat and have someone who is 6’ or taller sit in front seats. It’s ridiculous for a vehicle that’s $40k or more to have such shite for space, in my opinion.
My dad has a 2017 crew cab, 4x4 F-150 with a V8 that he bought for cheaper than I bought the 4Runner I have. And mine was purchased three years before his truck. His truck has way more space, power, and overall amenities (besides having cloth seats in his truck).

Gas mileage is what I expect, what I hate is the tiny gas tank and that I actually have to stick a key in to crank the car :firstworldproblems:

I have a 2016 4Runner SR5 premium 2wd with about 45k miles that i am looking to sell.

THey do ride more like trucks(or at least how trucks used to ride) so I do get the complaint if someone is coming from a crossover or similar SUV. For lack of a better word, it's a clunkier ride than most are used to. And if OP's wife is coming from an Acura SUV, she will definitely notice the difference.
And I don't get the size complaint. I'm 6'4", and have 2 teenage kids, and it's plenty big for our needs. Maybe the newer ones are smaller though. I drive a 2005 one, and I have no complaints.
Also, I'd get a V8 over the V6 all day, every day. Much better engine, IMO.
