I know we have an excellent thread about CCs but it is so long that it's value is mitigated. Can gurus provide me a quick list of 3 or 4 good options to review and consider? Looks like I will be away for about a year, so I would like to be a good steward with my credit card usage. Thanks

AMEX Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve seem to be the standard.

For personal international travel, Chase Sapphire Reserve has some nice benefits: trip interruption & cancellation insurance, some medical benefits, rental car coverage, and of course, triple points on travel purchases & certain other categories. No foreign transaction fees.

I can't speak to a business card

Thanks. It will be a personal card. With me being out of country for a year, the lack of international fees will be very important

What country or countries specifically? I think the Visa from Chase Sapphire will likely be more widely accepted. I’m partial to the AMEX platinum though.

Will work in UAE. No travel for work once there but likely travel for pleasure.

How does the Chase travel portal work? Does it have similar prices to Kayak or other type options?

its run by expedia, but IMO it sucks

it's also far from the best use of the points you earn

Chase travel portal is getting ready to switch over to Expedia, so expect similar options as seen there. I've used it a few times to book plane tickets & prices were competitive. Mostly, I transfer my Chase points to an airline miles program where I see a little better value for my points.

As does the AMEX travel portal, One of the big downfalls using them.

If you use the portal you get the points to the card but you will not get the hotel (Hilton, Marriot) status or points since they recognize it as being booked through Expedia. If you book directly through the hotel you’ll get status match and hotel points but not the multiple Amex points.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

Annual fee is going up $100/year may not be worth it especially since they halfed the sign up miles bonus

Oddly enough, I am thinking about going with their Reserve card at even a higher annual fee. Previously, I have refused to pay a fee, but this particular year, it just might make sense.

Where do you fly from and where are you going? That would be helpful as the airlines that have a major hub near you can be the most beneficial.

Which is why I have never and never will use the Chase or Amex travel portal. Always transfer your points to the airline partner for a better redemption and more flexibility with the airline.

Normally I fly out of BTR to various destinations. As such, I dont typically use the same carrier, I use whichever has best deal at that time.

For this thread, I would most heavily use the airport in Abu Dhabi. The destinations from there would vary.

I travel a good bit for work including the UAE and most other GCC countries and I have two CCs, an Amex Platinum and a Citi double cash back and find I use the Amex far more because I dont need to inform them where I am going, if I forget to tell City the damn thing gets blocked every time.

Their branch offices in major foreign cities are like small American Embassies.

I in general agree, the only exception I have seen is in unique circumstances. For example, I took my family of 4 to Paris for 11 days - hotels can be obscene for 4 people in the heart of the city (and hotel point redemption for Marriott/Hilton for 4 in Paris are ridiculous). Ended up getting a family room concept (one outside door and 2 inside doors to 2 rooms) right on the Jardens de Tulieres for 11 days - would have been $6K but was able to use UR. For that trip, it worked out to use the points that way or it was cash out of pocket.
