Which budgeting tool do you use or would you suggest? (married two young kids) Mint, Acorns and YNAB seem to be very popular.
Also, what is the toughest part of your budgeting and what have you found to be the most rewarding part of your budgeting?
My wife and I have been talking about budgeting but we've never gotten serious about it. We've got to start and would appreciate any advice.
Thank you!

Mint for budgeting. Personal Capital for tracking investments.

Planning for the unplanned. There are a lot of expenses throughout the year that are unexpected or miscellaneous.

Security and confidence in financial health.

"Put the big rocks in first." Identify the most important things to you and include them in the budget first. Reframe the budgeting as what you are guaranteeing to keep instead of what you are cutting away.

Someone from the LSU crypto group turned me into YNAB back in March and it's been life changing. It's different than anyway I've ever budgeted. But it's great once you figure it out.

I use YNAB for budgeting and Personal Capital for overall net worth.
Toughest part about budgeting is sticking to it. It’s unbelievable how much random shite gets purchased in my house.

I use YNAB. Getting into the habit of recording your expenses takes getting used to. But it's great

We have been using YNAB for the past year and a half and it has been life changing.
Big expenses are already planned for...not nearly as money stressed as we used to be

Another vote for YNAB. I'm not saying it's the only solution (I am familiar with Mint - I think Acorns is an investment tool - but don't quote me), but it has been great for getting a solid, visible hold on budgeting and money flow. Awareness is about 90% of the battle.

I’ve been using mint for several years but is there any advantage using YNAB?
I signed up for Personal Capital and they aggravated me for months with phone calls about a financial assessment so I deleted my profile.

It depends what you want out of them. If you just need something to visualize your budget with some basic tracking, Mint is fine. If you are trying to budget to change your spending habits, YNAB is the better choice as it forces you to actively use it everyday or every few days. I have also found it much easier to log transactions in YNAB than Mint.
I love YNAB because of its active nature. Suits my needs perfectly. I would give it a try with the 1 month trial to see if it's a system you would benefit from. If you're concerned about getting relentlessly contacted by YNAB, I doubt there's anything to worry about - I've received exactly 3 emails from them since January.
Just a note: I haven't used Mint since I switched to YNAB a couple years ago. I'm not sure how it has changed or improved since then.
