Best 2nd Credit Card
I currently have the Capital One Quicksilver card that I use for my regular purchases. It earns 1.5% cash back on purchases that I make. I'm looking for a good backup card in case something ever happened to my Capital One card. If I find something better, the Capital One card may become my backup card. We travel some but, I don't think it is enough to warrant looking for a specific card with travel perks. I have a son that will be attending LSU in the fall and I have thought about opening an account with Chase because there is a branch that is really close to his dorm. I would like to be able to open a joint account and then get us both cards if this would be the best route. I don't necessarily have to use Chase or get cards for both of us. I'm just looking for the best credit card available for me and if it turns out that he could qualify then that would be great. All of my FICO scores are above 800 so that should give you guys a starting point as to what credit card tier I would fall in. I appreciate any suggestions that you may have.

Well, it depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. The Capital One Quicksilver is definitely not the best primary card in my opinion.

I would recommend the chase Saphhire reserve as your primary. So many more options for redemption.

Chase Sapphire - For eating out and travel
Chase Freedom - Random purchases

Then transfer Freedom points to Sapphire. Use those points for travel as they count 1.25x!

I like the Amex Blue Cash for groceries (6x cash back) and for gas (3x cash back). I easily make like 30 bucks back a month on that card

I know this isn't exactly what you asked but here is my setup:

- Amex blue cash preferred - 6% cash back on groceries
- Penfed VISA - 5% cash back on gas everywhere including costco
- Citi Costco VISA - 3% back on restaurants & travel
- USAA VISA - 2.5% cash back on EVERYTHING

re: Best 2nd Credit Card
The discover student card would be a good one for your son to start in his own name (5% cash back on rotating categories, 1% cash back on everything else, and benefits for good grades)

The discover card in general is a pretty good back up card. I hit up the categories that make sense for me. Usually they do a club store like Sam's and costco on one quarter, amazon in the fall (good for gift buying), gas on one quarter, etc. It also usually give you double cash back on the first year. So you earn 10% cash back on the categories.

The other card I have is the citibank 2% double cash back card. Its 2% cash back on everything. It's my primary card.

Chase Freedom also offers one that's basically just like the discover, but I dont know what they offer for students.

None of those have a annual fee.

See above for suggestions

Does the amex blue give you 6x at walmart? Or just at places like Kroger and publix?

Has to be registered as grocery store only. Walmart usually won't qualify.

This is one reason why I'm looking into other options. I've had this account for as long as I can remember so I didn't want to close it. I also don't want too many credit cards. I'm mainly using it for groceries(and yes I shop at Wal-Mart), gas, utility bills, etc. Just your normal monthly expenses. I may be better off looking for a card that gives the most cash back on all purchases instead of just certain things.

Dont close it if yove had it forever, it will affect your score. Just put some BS charge on it like Netflix. Then set up auto pay.

If you make purchases on Amazon or at Whole Foods, the Amazon card is a good one to have.

It sounds like you need to switch to the Amex Blue Cash card as your primary. They give cash back on all purchases(I think 1.5%) but also do 6% on groceries and 3% on gas. It's probably the best card out there for most everyday folks that don't travel a lot.

You don't necessarily need to have charges on a card to keep it, it just prevents them from trying to close it automatically.

I keep getting "no longer available" on the website. That's quite disappointing.

I don't see this one on the PenFed site either and I'm a member.

Not sure what is going on. It appears to be active on their website. Blue Cash Preferred

This has probably been phased out. Try the Fort Knox Platinum VISA for 5% back on gas

re: Best 2nd Credit Card
The different American Express cards look like they have pretty good rewards but, they have an annual fee. I’ve never liked that. It’s kind of the principle of things. Can anyone explain to me why American Express would be better than the Chase Freedom card?

re: Best 2nd Credit Card
If you are looking for a cash back on everything and no annual fee the best you are gonna get is the citi double cash back card at 2% cash back. Believe me... I've looked.
