I don’t understand why you’d want to look for low pay work outside your field when you could be developing freelance clients in something related to your field. Go find a couple of local contractors who need drawings on the regular, see if you can use your hard earned skills to make more money. As a professional, your time has a value, don’t undersell your skills.

Have you considered going to your local community college or vo tech school to see if evening instructors in CAD are needed?

there are freelance websites online you can sign up, post your skills and get clients. upwork is one, I think.

selling stuff online, like someone else mentioned.

On the uber/lyft suggestion. I read an article where a guy did this for a year. took all his income and expense receipts to his cpa. turns out he broke even- made no money at all.

From what I understand shopify is booming in terms of connecting people with wholesalers and just all around 1 stop shop to launch an online business from home. I dont know the specifics but just as something ive invested in recently, its really booming.

I work at a fashion brand erp company. shopify integration for orders was our hot product of the year. saw lots of wholesalers go ecomm ready first hand.

A lot of companies frown on moonlighting in your field. Mostly as it relates to competition, so this may not be an issue, but he is using his skills obtained through their training, and probably more importantly their equipment. I’m assuming this guy does not have an AutoCAD license on his home computer and it would take a whole lot of side jobs to justify that.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to capitalize on some of my similar skills as well. Able bodied, but with a kid don’t want to spend a lot of time away in addition to normal work hours. Engineering background and AutoCAD proficient, but no CAD license at home. Very good in Excel, particularly with VBA.

Flipping products from cars to houses is probably the “best” answer, just requires a lot more investment and involvement.

I've been doing some digging and I see a lot of things about Remote Data Entry. Basically, if you are good with computers / Microsoft office and can type fast, you're wanted.

Any experience here with this?

So use open source drafting software, and don’t go after the kind of jobs your firm pursues. I’m not suggesting you become their direct competitor. But the firm doesn’t own your brain. That’s one reason I suggested teaching—163 open jobs on indeed.com for CAD instructors. I’m sure plenty are for online instructors, so location and schedule aren’t concerns. Brush up your resume and Canvas/Blackboard skills....

If your degree and skill command $30/hr, why would you want side work that pays $10/hr?

I like this idea. If you're half-way decent with a camera, this might work. I'm pretty good with item photos. Use to patrol Ebay for nice items with low prices and crappy photos and resell them for a profit with nice bright photos. Also, create an Ebay search for "lots", "kits" or "outfit", break them apart and sell the items individually. Also, be sure to add $.01 to every bid you make to help you outbid your competitors. Good luck....

Have sex with your wife/GF on cam. Just wear a mask. Prob an extra $2k a month. You can block out the state you live in so locals can’t find you.

Just food for thought.

Looking to make a little extra cash in the evening and on the weekends. I work a full time job, 40 hours a week but wouldn’t mind some more cash. Just got engaged and would like to have some money stashed away when we make our down payment on a house. What are some suggestions?

In January of this year I went to work for Live Ops from home. It started taking as seen on tv sales calls for 25 cents per minute, concentrating on weekends. After 90 days you have a lot more flexibility and if your stats are good you can be offered 28cents flat, and/or commission lines. I work a line now selling clubs and average well over 20$ per hour most days, working when I want. It's pretty easy to get started and if you can speak clear and read you can make it.
