Could Amazon be about to take over your local cinema? With Odeon's owner in trouble, deal could help tech giant shoot ahead in movie wars

-Amazon is circling AMC Theatres, the troubled owner of Odeon Cinemas
-The duo are said to have held talks about a potential takeover of AMC by Amazon
-But it is not clear if the discussions are still active or if they will lead to a deal

Pump and dump, if you owned AMC see it as a blessing to get out. AMC has like 5B in debt, rather pick up the pieces after bankruptcy.

What's Bezos seeing that I'm not? In the future going forward, theaters will need to offer niche services b/c internet will be the main avenue for entertainment.

Potentially helps in entertainment race against Netflix. If you own the theaters and can use that to leverage movie companies to only releasing their movie rights to Amazon over netflix...

Buy it and shut it down? I also think direct to internet is the future. I think the movie theater business is living on borrowed time. Maybe there is a future for artsy films or for a few screens in each city, but I think there are waaay too many theater screens for future demand.

A good way for Amazon to force the issue would be to shut down all those AMC screens. I just wonder if the studios would then partner with an entity like Amazon for showing movies direct to internet, or, if they would all want to have their own systems.

wonder if people think they mean AMC Networks (AMCX), which would actually make sense.

They've been saying this since VHS. Direct to internet works in a quarantine world but people like to get out and about.

They could rethink the theater experience. I think they go outside the box and Amazon studios could start producing more interactive movies and 4D experiences with seats and smells with some screens. Create new concepts in movie and dinner depending on films. They could start their own little mini-Disneys with themes for each wing.

Currently, the Palladium has a bar with live music, Bowling alleys, arcades, eateries, anything to get you in. A movie is almost secondary.

Well, it's easier and quicker these days to stream direct to the house, than it is to produce and sell VHS tapes, but I get your point.

I think the theater experience is by and large broken, compared to the at-home experience. You can pay $11 per ticket, plus the cost of concessions, to sit in a theater for 2 hours dealing with people's cell phones ringing, etc, or you can wait 6 weeks and get it at home for $3 - $5. People will pay the bucks to go see a blockbuster when it comes out, but those only happen so often.

Not alltogether different from LSU football. Sure, when Bama plays at TS, it's packed. But Middle Nowhere State? Tons of empty seats. Just easier to watch it at home. It's not as bad for LSU because most of the seats are bought via season tickets. Movie theaters are trying to do a subscription model, but they can't seem to get it right (yet).

Now maybe that's where Amazon thinks they can play. Get one movie ticket per month per Prime subscription? Pay $5 extra per ticket at the theater, and get a free download code for when the movie comes to home viewing? Convert half the theater spaces in each megaplex to Amazon lockers?

What is the pay difference for actors between say a Netflix, Amazon Prime, and big screen movie? Is there one?

I don't go to the theaters often, but there are some very nice movie seats now and you can get beer and dinner. Its evolving. Given that, a date with a couple beers and popcorn can hit $75 pretty easily.

Hollywood still very much prefers "movies" to start in a theater.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does that mean for those that have a few AMC stocks? I don’t have many shares, but I bought them when it was down to just over $3 a share and it has nearly doubled. Do I get out before the takeover or is it a good thing that amazon is taking over?

There is a rumor that Amazon may buyout AMC. Until that is reality you do not know what will happen to the common shares.

Of course it could all be just that a rumor, and nothing has changed for AMC except the share price. In that scenario you would need to decide between short term profit, and what you think of AMC long term.

If it was me, I would be selling on this rumor.

I think long term AMC will bounce back so I’m ok with holding on long term. I just don’t want to lose my investment if Amazon does buy them out. That’s where I’m fuzzy on the details. What happens to my AMC stocks if there is a buyout?

Obviously if AMC gets bought out by Amazon, you will be compensated in some way. However that is between Amazon and AMC at that point.

The only way to lose your investment is if AMC goes bankrupt, which is a real possibility.

Bought some a few weeks ago. Might do this. Either way, I'm in the green so might just ride it out.
