Advice on asking for a raise

For a friend. Not me. I am OT baller who earns a salary baws.

My friend is in insurance and has been with his company for 2 years. In the 2 years, he's made pretty incredible strides.

For the first year and a half he wasn't doing a ton of selling. They allowed him to really focus on selling about 6 months ago and has blown them away and is making pretty nice commission.

He's getting an hourly rate as his base. When should he ask for a raise? Is it too soon? Should he wait longer? If he does ask, what would y'all suggest as the best, most professional way?

Screw the hourly rate raise. Ask for an increased commission if you’re doing that well. And I’d wait until you have a year of the “killing it” under you.

I wouldn’t for a raise right now in his shoes. It typically backfires leaving him in an awkward place and his boss trying to rationalize why he shouldn’t get one when he might actually deserve one.

But, if you insist, possibly do it at the end of the year whenever you’re already expecting your annual bump/merit increase/cost of living increase. Sounds counterintuitive, but probably your best bet.

Still wouldn’t ask for a raise though.

Wait what? Nice commission based on great sales but wants a raise to his base? Does not compute.

I'm going through this as we speak. Our performance appraisal period was about a month ago and I made my argument as to why I deserved a "salary adjustment". I typed up a summary of my accomplishments this past year and I highlighted how my responsibilities have increased due to them laying someone off and basically dumping that person's workload onto my plate. At the end of it, my Director said he'll see what he can do from his end.

I wasn't happy with the response so I started putting my resume out there. I just came back from a site visit for a company and I have a few others that are asking me if I'm interested in learning about their open requisitions.

I'm doing this for insurance purposes for myself and also to gauge what my market value is. If my current company do happen to adjust my salary and it isn't enough, I would like to have a firm offer in my hand to go back to the table an negotiate with. If they still refuse to move, I will definitely have to give thought to move on away from the company. In summary, I just want to have some options on the table in case I'm not given what I think is fair value for the services I'm providing.

Does he work at a small agency, like less than 5 people?
Does he work for an independent or captive (State Farm, farmers, Allstate)?

In a sales job you should always do uncapped commission. However if he has been paid hourly he needs to make sure he is worth it to the company to ask.

I ask for a raise every month. Why should you be scared to ask for more money. They either her give it to you or don’t. Tell him to quit being a pussy and ask.

BTW what does earning a salary have to do with not needing a raise? Not sure i follow your logic in OP
