while I agree this is financially stupid, the $200-300/mo for this isn't the cause of 80% people living paycheck to paycheck.

She would have really been pissed if she had known that one of the owners would have a few uncashed paychecks rattling around in his desk at any given time.

Well, that's just dumb.

These are going to be the ones front in line screeching that it is unfair that people have been able to amass big 401k balances instead of enjoying the short term pleasures of spending every cent as soon as you get it.

Is this a concern? Is there a push to screw up 401k accounts?

I mean yea he could lose the check or have it stolen or something. But if it wasn’t for direct deposit or mobile check deposit it would take me weeks to deposit checks. At least that’s how it used to be before I had those things

I’m very concerned that there will be a push toward making 401k plans controlled by the government in an attempt to “make things fair”

Well, we sure could use a more egalitarian society.

Right now, no, but there are editorials abound laying the PR groundwork of the 401k being a failed experiment explicitly because people can choose to screw themselves that that money is better served going to the government to ensure everyone gets a fulfilling retirement.

Anyone irrational enough to be angry that someone manages their finances well, doesn’t spend more just because it’s payday and there is money in bank, and as a result the precise payday is background info to them is likely to be a constituent of interest for that political push.

They'll also turn it into a racial claim.

The far left whackjobs will use their insane "disparate impact" claim to say that it's discriminatory because blacks saved far less.

if you're living paycheck to paycheck, luxuries shouldn't be in the budget

luxury, "the state of great comfort and extravagant living."

Probably more than three quarters of posters in this thread. Hell, after only 4 years of contributions I have 18 months of expenses in mine and 30 years for it to grow. I can literally stop contributing right now and be better off than most Americans.

Thats the problem. It makes it easy to play class warfare to pass legislation taxing either all balances, or all balances over a certain withdrawal level per year.

Most people can blame it on wasteful spending on stuff they dont really need..
Try and contribute more towards an IRA and a 401k
Flood insurance and paying extra on your house mortgage
Otherwise you will work forever and be old and poor

I've turned into the Andy Dufrene of my place of business.

Ive actually had someone approach me with the phrase "So I hear you are the person to talk to about investments."

One thing I push is the notion that with patience and discipline to put even 20 dollars a week really adds up.
