The tale of two markets. Pretty wild month and a half we have had, but if this game is evidence of anything, it’s evidence of how oversold stocks were.

As of the last update there was only one portfolio in the negative. Breadth is back baby!

As I posted in another thread this afternoon, although I updated my spreadsheet this morning there wasn't much change since yesterday's update so I didn't post an update today.

One slight change as of close of trading yesterday is now none of us is in the red YTD. The last place player is +.83% today. You moved up one spot from 23 to 22 and improved YTD from 7.04% to 7.95%.

I realize that last year is last year but I just went back and analyzed how players did last year at this time in January versus where they finished the year in the standings.

No player who was in the bottom third of the rankings as of January 11, 2018 finished the year in the top 10.

I will be the first one then if the market has a year as rough as I expect. If it doesn't then I should finish in the middle somewhere securing my ban bet for ya.

Rankings updated through close of trading on 1/11/2019.

I've added a column on my spreadsheet which shows up just to the right of each poster's average YTD return next to your name.

That is what you were ranked on the previous update.

I updated the spreadsheet yesterday but I didn't post the update yesterday, so don't confuse the last posted update with the number next to your average % today. The last posted update was from close of trading on Wednesday. The previous ranking number shown today is from close of trading Thursday which I didn't post yesterday. Confused yet???

I underlined the new number (just this once) so that you can see what I'm referring to.

I hope you like this added information. If you don't like it let me know and I'll delete the new column in future updates. Thanks.

Thanks for doing this Russian. I know one of the participants VERY well and he posted his picks while I wasted away in banville.

I have a question for everybody--if you could stop today for the year with the return you have today would you?? Would you go to cash?

Maybe if the stakes were a little higher--if the winner of the contest got $1 million and could go to cash anytime during the year but could not return would you take the return you have now as your YE contest return and go to cash?

I believe I would if I were OG with a 23% return today.

The top 17 in the contest have returns already this year above the 90 year average of the S&P 500 of 9.8%.

If the stakes were higher and you were trying to win, contrarian bet is probably your best bet whether you believe it going higher or not. Obviously few would just take it out of the market at this point for no reason.

No, not after just one week. It is too soon.

OG could lock in a 23% annual return today. There are not many years you can get that.

I wonder how many years 23% would have won the contest?
