$10 and under stocks
I’m currently unemployed and looking to learn some new skills. I’ve always been interested in the stock market but never had the time to devote to learning more. Thanks to Covid I do now. I’d like to start out with low dollar amount stocks that have some potential and then try to grow from there. Focusing on the percentage growth more than anything else. What stocks are you looking at in the sub $10 range?

re: $10 and under stocks
This sort of topic gets posted frequently (stocks under $X amount), and I think the best advice is to not limit oneself to such a narrow price range, especially since a lot “cheap” stocks (e.g., low price per share) are “cheap” for a reason (not a good one). Most importantly, with so many brokerages offering fractional shares, price per share should not be a barrier to buying any stock/ETF that is offered by the major exchanges.

re: $10 and under stocks
I would suggest against trying penny stocks to strike it rich. If you are like many that temptation will simply be too strong to resist.

The only stocks I have right now under $10 are CYCN and OXY. I do not recommend either. Holding CYCN to avoid short term taxes on some pretty decent gains since May and holding OXY because I am an idiot.

Good luck. Not sure I have the stomach for low dollar stocks after being out of work, so I admire your ability to throw caution to the wind and take some chances.

Well it’s not a huge amount of risk, as I’m not putting a lot of money towards it. And approached not as a get rich quick scheme, but more of a live lesson through the in and outs before stepping up the dollar amount invested.

Why do you care if you buy 100 shares of a $10 stock or 10 shares of $100 stock. If it goes up 10% you are up the same amount of money

It would be closer to buying 20 shares at $10 or 2 shares at $100. And I figure there would be more movement and things to research at $10 price point but I may be wrong.

It isn't under $10, but UPWK is one of mine that I plan on holding for a while and continue to buy around $15.

As others have said, with partial shares being an option, don't let stock price be a deterrent to getting invested into something. I started buying AMZN when it was over $2,000/share and have built up a couple of shares over time.

I suggest playing carefully within your IRA account. It's a casino, but the odds are better if you study hard.

Most brokerage services have paper trading which use real daily stocks to simulate your investment bets. It is a good place to make your mistakes and get an eye for windage.

Read everything. Be careful. The sharks eat guppies.

A lot of sites like Marketwatch allow you to set up a mock portfolio and use pretend money. Better way to go if you want to practice.

Also, you don't necessarily want to set an arbitrary limit of $10. Might be better to get five shares at $20 than ten shares at $10.

I try to buy low, only dividend stocks, and avoid companies with a high debt to asset ratio.

How about 8 shares at $25 of something almost guaranteed to go up in the next month? WKHS

That is correct, you are wrong.
Just listen to the very first post in this thread. That's all you need to know.
Investing any amount of money is good, even just $200. Doesn't mean you have to just throw it away.

With one caveat.

The stock market is volatile in the short term. You don't want to end up selling at a loss because you NEED CASH NOW.

Look up the stock for yourself and see if it's a good buy or not.
