While I know the prevalence of WR sweeps was definitely due to Canada, I hope O and E carry that over into whatever it is that we run this year. With the lack of RB talent/depth compared to previous years and the surplus of wide receiver talent I think this needs to be retained in order to help compensate for the decline in the running game that I am afraid we will otherwise see.

Absolutely agree, it’s something to try to keep the defense off balance.

My memory is that Cam Cameron started calling a decent amount of WR sweeps at the end of 2015. Ensminger called his share after taking over in 2016. Obviously, Canada used sweeps a lot.

No mentions of sweeps as far as I know in the first two scrimmages. But maybe 2016 gives you some insight to what's to come.

We know LSU has been practicing the wildcat. WR sweeps and fake WR sweeps could be used while in wildcat.

Do we know who will be taking the snaps in the Wildcat? I assume that’s going to be an adjustment since we had planned on having Narcisse in on certain packages and assume those will essentially now become Wildcat packages.

I think with Narcisse gone, we would put a RB out there. I also like the thought of having a QB who can run though while in Wildcat. That way you can run, run, then pass. I think right now I would give Chris Curry the Wildcat duties. Maybe he can throw a nice spiral.

Coach O said they'll probably use a RB in the wildcat now that Narcisse is gone. Also mentioned giving someone other than a RB a chance... perhaps someone who was a HS QB??

This should absolutely be a part of the offense, not an identity though. There are many, many circumstances during a game in which the timing of the motion and snap can affect a play. I don’t think we should see it every drive by any means, but 6 to 10 times per game could actually help the running game a bit imo.

I definitely agree that it shouldn’t be an identity. With the speed we have at the skill positions it has the potential for some very big plays, but if it’s something that defenses are actively accounting for the entire game, it removes a lot of the potential.

As for wildcat, do we have any WRs that played QB in high school? I don’t think any of our RBs did. It’s not a requirement by any means but it doesn’t hurt.

It’s worked in the past as a wrinkle (see end of 2015 Chark ).

I am a fan of a limited amount of sweeps and wildcat looks. At one point last season it became evident to everyone in the stadium wherever the game was being played that a sweep was coming. For every big play out of the setup for a sweep you had a negative play. I also realize that you have to keep doing it and doing it so you can try disguise the look and that was a big storyline of the look overall. That you had to do it so many times to have true success running it. This says that there is no in between. It's either you run it all the time on every drive. Or not at all. Thinking that they'll do it just 6-10 times a game isn't how this look works. It's more like it'll happen once or twice a game to catch the defense on their heels and get a big surprise play out of it. All or nothing. This is how the WR sweep works.

Cam Cameron called WR reverses with Beckham in 2013 and called jet sweeps with Dural in 2014 and 2015 before he got hurt.

Then used Guice on a jet sweep against A&M and Chark in the bowl game.

Ensminger did not call many when he took over in 2016. He mainly used the play action pass and throwing to the backs out of the backfield.

This is true.

We had some huge plays this past year off the jet sweep Auburn 4th down 1st TD and Gage had huge runs vs Florida and Auburn off jet sweeps this year.

I just hope they are less predictable when trying to run these plays. I don't even think the having special packages for Narcisse would have worked. We all bitched about how predictable we were when Les did it.

The diff when RP did it was he was an actual NFL talent. And I still believe he was a perfect fit for the Crowton offense.

I think we'll see it being utilized the same way we did towards the end of 2016.

Have a slot receiver go in motion and threaten the jet sweep every now and then, but not every single play like last year.
