Would Cannon be considered for the heisman on the modern era?

He's considered the best lsu player by many fans, but is that just because of older generations that don't want to give the more recent players their due? Here is his heisman write up, but it doesn't show his defensive stats. He's great, but I don't think he would hang with modern athletes.

Heisman

I forgive you all for the name calling and bashing that will surely ensue.

Agreed. The training that players do now is way more intense. That being said, if he were in college now he would be doing the same workouts that today's athletes do. There really is no way to judge how good he would be in today's game.

His fantasy points for a single game is higher than any modern player (and any player EVER, for that matter), including Mike Vick and Aaron Rogers FWIW.

I know that's no measuring stick, but its interesting and it's tough to compare players from years past to modern players.

His size and speed could keep him with today's athletes.

6'1 210 is still big in today's game for RB

that's pretty average for a RB and small for a LB, but like someone stated earlier, if Billy Cannon had the training advantages of today's athletes there's no telling. There's no questioning his athletic ability, though

this is the correct answer, but Cannon was a once in a lifetime stud, size and speed, and he had both, are not everything, he had a killer instinct, a will to win, and a fire in his belly for kicking arse, to paraphrase him, "I know what it's like to be the race horse, I was the race horse.

Not only the different training but also different diet. I'd have to guess he would have been at least 20-25 pounds heavier and somewhat faster. The guy was amazing and would still be amazing.

On a side note, he is actually an avid horse racing fan and has been for a long time.

Of course he wouldn't.

he said that in an interview while they were on the subject of his horses, seemed like it was said in a melancholy way, but I got the feeling he was referring to having to always have been the one to carry the load(in the sports part of his life,) and he always did what was asked of him, and always came through

Mantle said something like that a few years before he died, "How much do you think you'd be making today Mick?" "Oh, about $600k." "but Mick, look what these guys are making now!" "I know, but I'm 60 years old!"

In almost every field the best of 20 years ago would not be the best of today. Still very good, but not best.

After 50 years that's of course even more true.

define the "best," can't say about his era, but these days the Heisman is not as much about your SID promoting you as it is about politics, the "best," if even definable, might not be the winner, Cannon would do just fine in any era

You can't really compare any athlete before the 70s with those of today. Cannon didn't have black athletes playing with him. I get sick of old people sucking his memory cock. Cannon was great for his time but wouldn't come close to making NFL today.

We met him at our alumni crawfish boil a couple of years ago. Mr. Cannon will crush your hand when he shakes it. I would not want him mad at me.

And I get sick of young people saying he wasn't any good if he didn't play against black players. Cannon did just fine against black players in the NFL, thank you.

3 'ships, numerous "all-star" bowls(think that's the AFC lingo,) all-pro at two different positions, #1 pick by both leagues, he would be OK
