Why was Kevin Steele such a bad fit here as DC?

I just saw a tweet that only 2 DC's have finished in the top 15 nationally for scoring defense in each of the last 3 seasons. Venables at Clemson and Steele at AU.

His defense at LSU was plagued with busted coverages. Why is he such a good fit there but was bad fit here?

cause Chavis left our Defense depth in shambles due to lack of recruiting

tbh his defense here wasn't as bad as most feared going in.

busted coverages

the result of a super fricking complicated scheme. i'd guess he's simplified somewhat at Auburn.

Because he has had some unbelievable D-Lines at Auburn. A talented D-Line and good linebackers can mask a lot of deficiencies in the secondary. Steele got here when our D-line was completely depleted, and the secondary did not pick up on his concepts very well. We had a ton of blown coverages in 2015.

He wasn’t all that bad in his only year here.

People gave Les crap for the hire because of the bowl game when his defense gave up 70.

But he’s been arguably better than aranda the last few years

ehhh, not really. depth was hurt more by the knucklehead syndrome that hit the DL bad that offseason than lack of recruiting. Bain, Trey Lay and Travonte 1.0 all left the program over the summer. but we still had a pretty decent rotation going there.

the secondary was hurt by J Mills missing the first half of the season. that was probably the biggest thing on the back end.

we returned a ton of guys from a defense that led the SEC in defense the previous year. I know there are gonna be hiccups with a new DC, but giving up a whole 7 points more was a bit much.

He was like Lou Tepper, looks really good when he has the right pieces to
run the scheme he wants, but not so good when he doesn’t.

Thete's a reason he's no longer at Clemson and Venables is there.

Give Steele credit but his track record before Auburn was pretty lame.

He was also bad at Clemson.

He is regressing at Auburn. I keep Feeling like they’re always about to fall off a cliff, but half the offenses in the SEC are so bad (Miss State, Arkansas Ole Miss vs any team with a pulse) they can keep their numbers low.

This I’ll add that no one gave him a chance. They hated him when he was hired and never wavered
