Why was Alleva hired as AD?

Serious question. Why was he picked? His most prominent accomplishments at Duke appear to have been inheriting Coach K; firing the successful Lacrosse coach in the wake of a complete and utter lie; and starting the Durham little league program.
Maybe there's more to the story. I don't know?

Always wondered why we bailed him out of Duke? Seems like you'd stay away from candidates like that.

Someone lost their damn mind, or he had a huge arse binder....

Because the LSU board is inept. All of the problems start with Scott Ballard and company.

I have always wondered how the frick we hire a guy that failed at duke. The lax scandal should have made him radioactive but no LSU just dives on in

Wish I could tell you. I've heard that the Duke admins were happy to have Alleva taken off their hands, since they didn't even bother trying to keep him after he informed them of his offer from LSU.

This is what I don't understand. He handled that about as bad as he could have and LSU still went after him. He always has made decisions on pure emotion. (Duke lax, JJ hire, retaining Miles, hiring O)

Seriously. Was he politically connected to LSU or Louisiana? Did he present a composition pad with the plan "Lure Coach K away from Duke" written on the first page? Did the BOD think they were actually hiring Sam Waterson from Law and Order? Was he the only person to answer the ad on Monster.com?
It didn't make sense then, and it makes even less now

He should have never gotten another AD job again after what happened at duke. Yet here we are
Posted on 12/29/16 at 10:35 pm to Alt26
Duke probably sold LSU on how good he was, to get rid of him, that's usually how things are done, to cover a big f'up...

Great questions but you're trying to derive logic from an illogical situation. The only answer is that the people that hired him and continue to keep him are completely clueless and inept.

Because the shot callers wanted someone weak who they could use to do their bidding. Needed someone slimy and desperate. Alleva was their perfect fit

Skip Bertman. We let a old baseball coach let Saban walk and hand pick his successor.

LSU Board of Supervisors is an inept group that have no idea what they are doing. A bunch of rich guys who sit around slapping each other on the back telling each other how smart they are. They have no idea what it means to be an elite program. They allow Saban to walk, screw up Miles firing 2 years in a row, don't know how to conduct real coaching searches so you end up with Trent Johnson, Johnny Jones, Nikki Caldwell and they let the best track coach in the country leave for TAM.

Serious question.
Because LSU is run by a corrupt cadre of political appointees who don't give two shits about the school and just want people who will cowtow to them. Anybody who shows any competence or independence, like Mark Emmert, immediately gets on their bad side and has to fight them for everything. Emmert wanted to hire Gary(?) Barnhardt (who was AD at Oregon and was one of the top ADs in the country at the time) as AD back when Joe Dean was retiring, but the BoS wouldn't let him do his job. Their mantra was that Emmert had hired the football coach (Saban), so they were going to hire the AD. That's the mentality that runs LSU. Emmert had made arguably the greatest hire in the modern history of LSU athletics (Brodhead's hire of Bertman is the only other candidate), but the guy he hired was independent and didn't cater to their political whims, so they were damned sure not going to let him make another one. They insisted that they needed an "LSU guy", which was code for Doug Moreau, whom they wanted because he was part of the entrenched good ole boy network. Emmert didn't want that, so he turned to Skip, outflanking the BoS by saying no one was more of an LSU guy than him, and basically made the best of a bad situation.
Unfortunately, Emmert moved on and the BoS was again free to play their stupid political games with LSU, which they have done ever since, to the complete detriment of the school as a whole and the athletic department in particular. For decades prior to the arrival of Mark Emmert, LSU wallowed in mediocrity for this very reason. We have now gone beyond the end of the lingering effects of Emmert's management of the school, the BoS has reverted to their old familiar tactics, and the whole place is a total shitshow again because of it.
It's the BoS' fault, it's the governors' fault for appointing them, and, ultimately, it's the people of Louisiana's fault for putting up with such ridiculous shite for so long. Not just with LSU, but with everything. Some say you get what you demand (if it's good). Others say you get what you settle for (if it's bad). The people of the State of Louisiana demand the worst and almost always manage to find it.
If you care about LSU and you're not happy with the way it's being run, take a look at yourself and your choices at election time. Have you ever given a thought to how a given candidate would be for LSU? When you voted for Kathleen Blanco (a ULL fan and hater of LSU) or Bobby Jindal (a psychotic with delusions of presidential grandeur who has been unquestionably the biggest enemy of LSU that ever occupied the mansion), did you ever stop to think what you were doing to LSU?

Understood. What politicians in the state with the most pull to get things done are solid LSU supporters and/or alums the good people of La. should vote for? Who needs to be voted out in your opinion and who are the folks who provide the most hope? Serious questions here.
