the numbers Texas put up was a confluence of things.

First, Ehlinger is really good, and they have good WR's who are going to get open, given enough time, and catch the ball.
We played a containment pass rush, which is out of character, which I doubt we do again this season. We should have gotton after the QB and also blitzed more (though it is hard to fault being we won).
They converted a lot of big plays when we seemed to have them staggered, which shifted momentum back to their offense. There is a bit of luck involved in football, which along with the great skill they already have, worked for them when we seemed to have them .
For some reason the refs were allowing blatant holding by their oline more than the usual amount. Maybe it was called the same both ways, I don't know. But it, along with the previously mentioned containment pass rush, really hurt our ability to get to Erlinger. Even when one of our Dlinemen were getting past the oline they would be grabbed or hooked, sometimes dragged down. Given enough time, and with the quality of their WR's, someone is going to break free and Erlinger was going to find them.

I am pretty sure that Ika was missing from the game and thus... less depth on the DL.

The 19 play drive is what really killed them though. That coupled with an offense that scores quickly did the D in.

They will be fine as long as the DL stays healthy after their kinda bye week to rest up this weekend.

Texas game is the best thing to happen to our D.

Hopefully it humbled them and put a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season.

They can play great against everyone until Bama and all they will hear is how Tua and his receivers will carve them up worse than Ehlinger and the Horns.

They have something to prove...

I'm still not sold on the DL being great and able to generate a consistent pass rush without blitzing. No one truly knows how significant an injury Lawrence has. Chaisson is there, but he's not consistently flashing other than a few plays a game. Shelvin played fine, but he really needs Ika to give him a breather. Divinity still seems to be LSU's best pass rusher, but he's now inside.

Certainly there is time to improve. But following the Texas game I'm less concerned about the inside LB's than I was at the start of the season and more concerned about the DL/OLB's. I know the coaches really like Divinity inside, but Queen and Clark seem quite capable of handling their own. I wonder if as the season goes on LSU doesn't consider putting Divinity back at OLB some.

Maybe Florida will slow the offense down... and Bama. No one else will. It is just a matter of the will to go after it. If we go to,Vandy and establish the run it will screw every thing up.

If we play Florida and try to run the ball to run clock and preserve our defense we are screwing up.

ok, so here's my question, what happens or what will be the consensus when the next opponent in the near future drops 30 plus on the defense? what will you say then? because it will happen

The 19 play drive completely gassed our defense then our quick scoring offense only compounded the problem. I usually don’t play the what if game but I think it’s a different ball game if CEH catches that 3rd and 1.

The defense will be fine because they will not miss tackles and miss play balls in the air all year. The defense will be fine because we will not be trying to contain a mobile QB that also happens to have an amazing passing night every week. So much of this overreaction is going to look absolutely sill by the end of the year.

You are not going to have another game that both Fulton and Delpit miss tackles and misjudge plays. I also think Aranda and O are pissed and are holding the D and themselves accountable. And although Texas deserves credit for a very good offense, this won't happen again.

defense is the weakest link

Not necessarily. Texas has an extraordinarily fine mobile QB and receivers and they were more successful than originally thought they could be. LSU won't face such an attack before the Bama game.

Also it should be noted that Texas gained barely over 3 yards per play running the football.

this. I get so tired of hearing that stupid shite repeated over and over on here. If the defense stops them and gets them off the field then the LSU offense gets more plays and the defense is on the field less.

Nobody is disputing this. Obviously if the defense gets a 3rd down stop on the drive, it's a different game. A handful of missed open-field tackles, if made, would have changed the outcome from a solid win to a blowout. At the same time, the 19 play drive really did crush our defense for the rest of the second half. Both things can be true.

I'm not freaking out because a) it's extremely rare for a drive to be sustained for that length of time against any defense and b) I expect our players to tackle better now that they've had some game-time experience against similar athletes.
quote:

OUr offense getting first downs and moving the ball helps the defense. if our offense was getting a lot of 3 and outs it would be more detrimental to our defense.

So you acknowledge that a short drive ending with a punt can cause the defense to get winded, but not a short drive ending in a score? If one is true then they are both true.

In the second half of that game, Texas played at a pace equivalent to 102 plays per game. Even if you don't count the long drive, they were playing at a pace equivalent to 88 plays per game. Our offensive efficiency absolutely contributed to this. That doesn't mean I want the offense to be less efficient - just that it's reasonable to assume this had an impact on our defense.

Defense has been giving up 3r/4th and long for a while and weak against the run, you just happen to notice it in the Texas game.
