Why not let Orgeron play out his contract, why the hurry to extend?

I know the easy answer is Alleva. But no one would ever be able to explain to me why Orgeron is being treated like this hot commodity and "can't let him get away". No one is asking for him, at least not at this level. He'll sign for whatever we give him after the 3rd year if we want to retain. To me, he still needs to show he can keep his promise as far as getting the best, hell, I'll give him a pass, just competent coordinators before we extend him.

This has probably been discussed quite a bit already. I'm venting.

Apparently Orgeron says it’s a recruiting disadvantage to not but under contract for 3 years or more

I’m fine with him being under contract for 5 years, as long as you make stipulations on the buyout, or make it a low buyout.

You can do anything with a contract, for instance... make his buyout contingent on his record. If his record is 8-4 when he’s fired then he only gets 30% of his buyout, etc.

There is no reason to extend him.

People were being ridiculous. It could all come down crashing so hard and you are stuck with yet another large buyout.

Even with higher success, I don't see anyone poaching O.. Whoever would want him would have to factor in that they would have to also have incredibly pricey coordinators to even assume it might work.. and even then it's going to be a gamble unless you have serious talent.. and do those team want O as HC?

I just don't get the extension talk either. I wouldn't even see a need to extend him had LSU made the playoffs. Look at AU giving Gus that extension and now they want to fire him. And they actually had legit interest from his Arkansas roots.. I don't know that anyone would have legit enough interest to poach O..

O probably wouldn't really consider going any where else either.. could be a HUGE gamble for him as well.. unless the money is just insane.

For Alleva to act like there is nothing we can do and we are hamstrung is either laziness or incompetence

Again, you can extend the contract without a large buyout. You can write anything into the small print of a contract.

Realistically, why does 9-3 get him an extension?

I've seen folks make that argument and I don't buy it. It forces LSU to either overpay to keep a stop-gap coach or execute a sham extension to trick recruits into thinking LSU has a long-term commitment to a stop-gap coach.

The key to long-term program stability is either making public a succession plan to promote Aranda to HC in 2 years or beginning the process for a new head coach now. Extending O's contract is just wasted money.

It will be difficult to consistently land top recruits once they realize LSU is happy with a ceiling of 9 wins and a Citrus bowl appearance. That's what we are right now with no commitment to try to get better.

You're 100% correct about Alleva. We know how the man operates. He just gave an extension to a terrible WBB coach for "recruiting" justification. Nobody wants Orgeron. He's not going anywhere. I agree that we should make him prove himself before rewarding him with an extension. What if he extend him and we lose the bowl game? What if he brings back Ensminger as OC next year and we're stuck with yet another season with a dumpster fire on offense?

Negative recruiting

Guys this is not rocket science. If your coach has 2 years left on his contract he can't tell a recruit anything about the recruits next 4 years because he doesn't know he will even be there. Giving any coach 4 years just gives recruiting a secure foundation. If you think any Kid who is a high level recruit won't be bothered by that then you just don't get college athletics. Every school in the country would take advantage of us for that. Period

I don't see a reason to extend at this point. Let it play out. The negative recruiting angle is not an issue because if we don't retain him and nab a top HC recruiting will be fine. Negative recruiting only occurs if you make crap hires.

I didn't expect much from this season because of the huge turnover on the offensive side, but if we lose our bowl game and finish with 2 straight losses it will be a big disappointment.

2019 should be a great season. Experience and talent will be there so it will be a put up or shut up season. I've had 2019 pegged as THE year since early 2017. If LSU doesn't legitimately challenge for the SEC and a CFB playoff spot pink slips need to be handed out all the way up to Alleva.

The biggest negative recruiting tool imaginable is the fact Ed Orgeron is the head coach at LSU.

Orgeron agent pressuring Alleva for the extention...agent trying to capitalize on value now knowing the value may go down over the next three seasons

If he was going into the final year of his contract, then I'd agree with you. But he's finishing up year 2 of a 5 year deal. If O can get the problems on offense fixed and have us in playoff contention next year then an extension would be warranted. He's posted 2 seasons of the same type of record that got a national championship winning and winningest coach in school history canned. There's no reason to extend him while he's still got 3 years left on his deal and we aren't in championship contention nor has he fixed the main problem with Miles' teams (inept offense).

He has not earned an extension. No team will outbid LSU for him. He should be happy with what he has.

LSU loves to put themselves into situations like this, and yet if it doesn’t work out in the next 2 years they are fricked if they don’t make some sort of stipulation that favors them in terms of the buyout. But hey, look at the amazing job they did with the previous coaching search and that will tell you all you neede to know.

Here's how that conversation with a recruit is going to go:

Rival coach to recruit: "You need to know that coach O only has 3 years left on his contract. That means HIS SCHOOL is saying they can't promise you he'll be there for all four years of your college career. On the other hand, I'm locked in for 4+ years here. So you can go to LSU and maybe or maybe not play for the coach you commit to, or you can come here and KNOW I will be here the entire time you're here."

Now, there is a difference between giving an extension and giving a fully guaranteed extension. If LSU wants to put out a press release showing support of O by saying they've extended his contract through 2022. Fine. But guaranteeing the full salary of that 5th year is asinine.

The simple truth is O has no leverage upon which to turn down ANYTHING LSU offers. LSU is his ONLY option to be a power 5 HC.
