Coaches hired directly from assistant coaching positions:

Tim Tadlcok
Oklahoma, Texas Tech Assistant 2006-2012

Tim Corbin
Clemson assistant 1994-2002

Kevin O'Sullivan
Clemson Assitant 1999-2007

Andy Canizarro
LSU assistant 2014-2016

Dan McDonnell
Ole Miss assistant 2001-2006

Tony Vitello
TCU/ARK assistant 2011-2017

Brian O'Connor
Notre Dame assistant 1995-2003

Dan Heefner
DBU assistant 2005-2007

Hire Jake Gautreau and be done with it.

But why do it if you don’t have to?

Because the next greatest coach out there may be an assistant somewhere.

Maybe, or maybe they suck.

Go hire a proven winner at a big time program. At least then you know what you’re getting.

Great point. Kinda like how LSU football hired Joe Brady and look at him now. Already getting head coaching interviews in the NFL

SW has a reputation of big hires. He has created that imsge st each of his stops so that now people here expect a big, big splash.

He is a victim of his own success. He can’t go low. He had to go hire or folks will be mad

But you are right, the next Skip might be a phone call away.

It doesn't matter who he hires, there will be a group of people mad.

I've seen people arguing against Corbin, Sulli, Vitello, McDonnel, Godwin and Casey. You aren't really going to find a list of more successful coaches anywhere else.

If Skip is your bar, prepare to be disappointed.

7 of the 8 guys on that list went directly into Power 5 Jobs and succeeded rather quickly.

So yes every HC was once an assistant. Most of them aren't put into big boy jobs right off the bat. Experience matters but not nearly as much as people think.

I agree with you. It’s why the Vitello narrative that he’s unproven is dumb.

You are hedging your bets on what you’re getting. Any coach can fail

We hired Skip probably because we couldn’t hire a big name coach, but would we have been the same worn Ron Frazier his boss?

Idk. Ron Frazier won 2 CWS Skip won 5.

Hiring a big name coach is no guarantee of success and hiring an assistant is no indication of failure. It's a crap shoot either way. SW gets paid the big bucks to hire the right man, so I leave it to him and I'll support whomever he hires until I have reason not to.
