Why does Newman only pitch only one inning?

I understand he's the designated closer but why can't he pitch the last 2 or 3 innings. Are there certain rules I don't know about. I breath a sigh of relief everytime he steps on the mound. Seeing our pitching woes, I would like to see if he could pitch a whole game. I'm not a baseball novice so go easy on me.

Why did you spell his last name like that?

Youre still misspelling his name and I'll ignore the redundancies in your subject too and just agree... with how awful our bullpens been, Id think Newman would get more work.

So were Matty Ott and Louis Coleman. They closed out games pitching multiple innings many times

I was being a smart arse. Coleman was a starter though wasn't he? Only time I remember him closing was finish out the CWS back when Mainieri could coach... sort of

They pulled him after e perfect 8th in the 2nd A&M game and I was pissed. Sure enough, the next guy gives up runs, but we still won. Then in the last game, up 3-0, Newman pitched to the minimum in the 8th, again he gets pulled, this time we lose 4-3. Blame it on the whatever coach makes the decision, not sure if it's PM or Dunn.

because baseball coaches/managers FAR too often go by "the book" instead of real-time conditions and feel for what's actually occurring.

If a basketball substitute, who normally only plays 10 minutes and scores 4 points, is draining 3-pointers, the coach shouldn't pull him. Instead, ride the hot hand.

Same for baseball. If a pitcher has really good stuff in a game, no need to yank him just because "the book" says to do it.

Pitchers aren't machines - they don't have the exact same control, velocity, and movement on their pitches every game. Ride the hot hand based on each individual performance in each individual game.

It's called coaching.

I didn't watch the game last night so I can't even tell you if Newman pitched but if you are referring to last night, then the reason would be that it was a midweek game and the coaching staff didn't want to burn their closer with an important SEC series starting on Thursday.

But yes, I agree that a pitcher that is pitching well shouldn't be pulled with a small lead just so he would be available later in a series. We've seen this too many times this year but in the coaching staff's defense, you expect the next guy to come in and do their job. Baseball is all about strategy. Unfortunately it hasn't worked well for us so far this year.

i'll just say you're a lucky guy. sadly, I did watch it and i'm still traumatized by what I saw.

I have never seen a high school pitching staff do as bad as LSU did last night.

That A&M game was Newman's first coming back from his injury. They thought he was going to be out even longer so they rightfully didn't push him.
