Why does Aranda have the dbs play way off a lot of times?

Good question. I also haven't been impressed with Fulton's performances so far. Am I the only one that thinks so?

Willing to give up the underneath stuff than a big play.

You see it everywhere.

I guess the idea is that even if you have an advantage underneath you can still run forward and they still have to complete the pass.

Idk I like Press but if you get burnt you can be toast.

Yeah, not a big fan, reminds me of Tepper and of Pellini on the second half home collapse against Tennessee.

Fulton gets a bad rap

Yes he has bean beaten a few times but that happens to literally every CB.

There was that big play VS La Tech hutnhe was in good position, it was just a very well placed throw.

And the PIs people keep bringing up we’re kinda BS and the refs had been letting both teams get away with way worse for 3 quarters.

Yeah, I think Aranda figures a high percentage of the time teams will trip up somewhere and have to punt. The stuff underneath is open, but we have great players that will usually snuff out plays or not let them go for big yards if they do complete. So an incompletion or a penalty can be a drive killer and sooner or later they have to punt.

It works well in certain situations but you better be able to cover ground fast and tackle

That's not all. When CBs play off, there is often a linebacker or safety who is dropping underneath that route. And, LSU isn't always in man to man. So, the CB who is lined up over a WR may actually be in quarter or 3 deep coverage.

In other words, it is much more complicated, and that's one of the reasons LSU is very good.

I figure sometimes, a small minority, he's baiting them with nickel, safety, or LB on the box routes and slants.

It was obvious we baited LTU on the slants several times with LBs.

Right it’s a lot harder to complete 10 short passes than 1 big one.

He doesn’t have the confidence in them to play on the line and not get beat. In 2006 I asked Pelini the same thing. He said you have more to lose by playing them on the line. If you have a guy with good cover skills that can make tackles he likes to play back a little and keep them in front of you. We give up too many big plays so I don’t know what’s best.

It’s not about confidence it’s just about what you do with a big lead.

Everyone acts like man coverage is easy.

You basically have to run the same route as a WR, backwards, without knowing the route. It’s one of the hardest things to do on the field.

Completely agree… There were several times that we ran a blitz package and the DB’s are 7 to 10 yards off the receiver. I’m no coach or defensive specialist but it seems like we would play them tight on the line when we blitz. More opportunity for a pick or a sack.

sort of a bend don't break type of thing. I personally don't think it's necessary bc of how much speed we have, but it's far better than Chavis's "prevent"

Joseph is good but young. Fulton has not looked as good as hoped. It's clear that Aranda doesn't trust them %100 man-to-man yet. I imagine that will change in a couple of weeks whether those guys have improved or not. i just think Aranda has been trying to keep the game in front of these guys until they look more comfortable and less likely to blow coverage.

Fulton has been in position but hasn’t played the ball well a few times leading to some big receptions.

I have a theory, might just be me wanting to justify last weeks performance. Maybe not.

Aranda wasn’t calling his normal defensive scheme last week, I think that’s obvious. The entire 2nd half he was bringing 3 guys (just the DLine). And those guys are more run stuffers than pass rushers.

Usually his defense is attacking, last week he was giving their QB ample time to throw it.

I think Aranda was using that game as a way of seeing what his DBs are capable of in preparation for OM, UGA, Bama, A&M, etc., You can’t correct mistakes in coverage if the QB is on his back, so he used that game to work on it.

Their last drive seemed much more Aranda-like. He brought pressure which resulted in:
- incomplete pass (throw away)
- sack
- 13 yard scramble, but QB was running for his life
- incomplete pass (throw away)
- incomplete pass
- sack

This would also explain why you saw a lot more guys rotating in the secondary. Wanted to work all of them in, and see how they did in pure pass coverage.

It’s 3rd and 8 and our guy is 8-10 yards off the line?

Easy quick slant for a 1st down.
