Whoever said he needs his jersey retired is an idiot.

If he had finished on his posterizing attempt today; hang the jersey.

Who is saying that?

He is a good player but retire his jersey? Absolutely not

He’s going to get there. He beat the Pats twice in Super Bowls. Find another analogy.

It’s like Ryan Fitzpatrick getting into the hall of fame.

Pretty sure the requirement for retired jersey is a player of the year award or a heisman
Mays is a lock for the LSU HOF

but let’s not put him in the same breath as Shaq, pistol Pete, and Chris Jackson.
He’s above all three of those tbh, though Shaq did graduate eventually.

Mays is a good player, but it is TOTALLY ABSURD to retire is jersey and elevate him to the status of our handful of greats. Great guy but not legendary.

Mays will go down as my favorite basketball player bc of his perseverance. From bouncing from coach to coach to dealing with the loss of his best friend who was tragically murdered.
He also showed great improvement from when he was a freshman. He used to always miss at the hoop, now he is one of the best finishers in the country. He's an excellent defender and works tirelessly to improve on his game.
I say all that to say he clearly isnt on Shaqs maravichs Petits Jacksons level. And it's not even close

I’ve heard zero people say Mays should get his jersey retired. He’ll be remembered fondly for what he’s done, but there is no way his jersey will be retired.

I guess it depends on what a retired jersey means really.

Is it solely about athletic achievement? Is it about a combo of that plus the way a player represents the university?

Are there are other considerations?

Mays is one of my all time favorite players for so many reasons, definitely my favorite player over the last couple years- he’s the kind of kid that I’d want my daughter marry- but even I don’t think he’s worthy of Jersey retirement. That’s crazy talk.

My guess is when Andy Kennedy said it (if he did) it was hyperbole- to get his point across that he’s really good- but surely he doesn’t seriously put him up there with guys like Maravich, O’Neal, Chris Jackson, etc.
However- if somehow this team got hot- and went on a tear winning the Whole tourney and Mayes played his butt off and was the tourney mvp- then his jersey could definitely be hung.
