Why didn't LSU just make Ed O the defensive coordinator?

He's been the head coach at two major programs, it's not like defensive coordinator would have been a huge jump for him from defensive line coach.

I remember thinking this too when we hired Steele and O. At the time I just put my trust in the team, but now I'm not sure. He might've brought swagger that Steele doesn't. Doesn't Steele stay in the booth?

It's pretty obvious at this point that Kevin Steele wasn't forced on Les Miles or anything. He was Les Miles' decision through and through.
I think Miles thought he would get a great recruiter out of steele and improve talent, and steele could maybe last a few years coaching up a defense that was already pretty good. My only guess.

Being a good DC is not comparable to being a good head coach or even DL coach. Im not saying O couldn't do it, but they are not comparable.

I wonder the same thing every day. The only thing I can think of, is , he wanted to get Steele to try and use that against Alabama.

There's way worse D's all around the SEC west though
He did decent with what he had. Still never gave up as much in a game as we did last year. I'd put 31 points on the D last game bc of the turnover pretty much gifting 7. But the offense sputtered too much. We had opportunity to be more competitive.

Any ways I don't think Steele was ever going to be the long term solution. They brought him in to recruit and as a 1 year stop gap and guy who didn't require bringing in all his guys.. This allowed LSU to maintain elite recruiting this year. Steele may take a position job at lb here or somewhere again like he did at Alabama
