Why did Skip retire so young?

He was only 63 when he retired as LSU baseball coach, pretty young considering Saban is older than that now and Adolph Rupp coached well into his 70's (just looking at a couple of all time great college coaches).

Health reasons would be my guess.....

Didn't he have two hip replacements?
I would imagine all that standing in practice and the dugout became painful.

Dude could barely walk to the mound by the time he retired.

He was AD from 2001 - 2008. Better pay and easier job I guess.

Many people retire in their mid 60’s...plus he really didn’t retire...

Actually, there were two reasons, neither had anything to do with health.
1. Skip was heavily involved with Easton Bat company. They actually paid him as a spokesman for many years and paid him extremely well. He also procured the contract for the Easton Bats with LSU. Easton decided to not renew his contract.
2. There was a big push from TAFT and the Admin for Skip to take over the AD position. This was supposed to help LSU all around with recruiting and corporate sponsorship.

Guessing the AD job had something to do with it.

we should have made Saban the AD and then have Herb actually do the job but take orders from Nick.

Bingo. Skip was suffering. He retired at the right age for him.

I think towards the end it was the travel that he really had issues with.
He probably would have stayed longer, keep in mind, he wasn't making $1 million dollars and baseball coaches were not commanding high salaries. PM making $1 million is all due to the trailblazers like Fraser, Bertman and Polk who showed baseball could be profitable.
The AD role allowed him to retire with a better situation with the higher salary.

Din't Skip have a heart attack and bypass surgery a few years ago? He probably saw that coming and figured he wanted an easier job indoors out of the elements.

Skip was really rough for 63

He wanted to party more.

Plus his wife's trips to Vegas came first.
They would schedule road trips to UNLV any chance they got.
I remember the player stories from 91 when they played a 3 game set at UNLV.
LSU 14 - 4
UNLV 5-1
LSU 9-4

Wayne Graham is still going at it at 81 years old

Yeah but Skip spent the entire 90's partying at Barrett's Barleycorn. That takes a toll on a man.

doing all of the prep work for the IPO for Skip Bertman's Batting Cages was taking too much of his time

When Rice played here in the regionals last year it took Graham so long to get to the mound, the reliever who started warming up when he left the dugout was ready
