Why did Guice get so many carries late against A&M?

Reading Dandydon this morning and seeing him talk about LF's records made me really annoyed that he didnt have the single game rushing record.

This is not a knock against Guice. He is an amazing talent that rose to the occasion this year, but Fournette waited three years to get the chance to break that record that stood for over a decade (he could have had it against Syracuse, South Carolina, or Auburn last year).

He overcame injuries to put on a clinic against Ole Miss, Orgeron's former team in a game that he wanted badly, shattering Alley Broussard's record in a mere 16 carries.

In that game, Fournette could have easily gone well over 300 yards, but Guice handled 10 of the last 11 carries to run out the clock in what was still only a 10 point game at the time he took over, though the game was not really in doubt. That seemed to be an effort that deserved to stand in the record books for another decade.

But just a month later, Guice was given over 35 carries, including nearly a dozen carries on the last two drives when the game was a rout, as he chipped away with 3 yard carries until he finally broke the record by a single yard.

My question is, why???

Williams or Brosette could have easily taken those snaps to run out the clock the way Guice did for Fournette. Why was Guice given twice as many carries to squeak by a record in a game that meant nothing?

Guice would have had the stage to himself next year to try to take down that record, and he may just do it again. But it just seems so anticlimactic and almost disrespectful to Fournette for him to lose such a precious record in that fashion.

Especially since Guice would have likely never come close to the record if Fournette was playing, as he would have been if LF wasn't allowed to suit up when he wasn't ready against Florida.

It just seems like there is something more to that story. Is there some sort of personal issue between O and LF?

I sure hope we get to see Fournette in the purple and gold one more time against Louisville. If his bowl performance record is any indication, he may make another run at the single game record, and I'd love to see him get it back in his last game as a Tiger.

We were trying to protect a guy that will be a top 5-10 pick...how fricking stupid right?

Not at all. I wasn't opposed to taking out LF in that game.

I said that to highlight the difference in treatment that LF had compared to Guice. Is Guice not worth protecting?

I understand LF had an ankle issue already that we didn't want to reaggravate, but couldn't Guice just as easily come up with an ankle or some other injury late in a game that was far more out of reach than the Ole Miss game was? How crazy would this board have gone if Guice got hurt late in a meaningless game we were winning in a rout?

Guice had FOURTEEN carries in the 4th quarter alone in a game we were up by three touchdowns.

You are making my point for me.

It is as if the only concern was getting Guice that record. Again, why?

The difference is that Fournette already was hurt and still playing. Guice has not been hurt

If O was coaching those games LF would have had over 300 yards. O seems to reward his players with more playing time, if they want it.

Les seems to lean more toward protecting his players from injury thus reducing the number of unnecessary plays.

Neither philosophy is right or wrong, its simply what you prefer. I prefer O's philosophy. It's more fun for the players however it is also a little more risky (in terms of injury).

Maybe Guice deserved the record. He could have easily broken the record in the Arkansas game but they sat him.

i dont hink you are picking up what he is putting down.....

We were up by 3 touchdowns, why was RB1(Guice) still in the game running 14 carries in the 4th Qtr. Why not RB2,RB3 to protect RB1

That's because Guice is the best RB on the team. I said that going into the season.

I was thinking the same thing. Also take into account that LF didn't even travel to the game at A&M when suspended Arden Key was on the sidelines. Something just seems a little odd about that game and the fact that LF wasn't on the sidelines with Key was and they gave Guice so many carries risking him getting hurt. It just feels like there is something more to this but we will probably never know.

Coach O is giving the sports writers something to talk about going into next by thrusting Guice into the LSU record books and getting him ready to make a run at the Heisman. If he Broke a Record that took the Greatest Running Back Ever at LSU 3 years to do it, and it only took Guice starting 1 full game, imagine what he can do with a full season as the feature back. #Guice4Heisman2017

We were only up 14 going into our last drive with 8 minutes to go. I'm ok with Guice getting carries to put it away

Probably had more to do with giving him confidence and showing him love and that they need him after his performance against Florida in which he fumbled in red zone and ran wrong play on final play. The kid was probably down in the dumps and felt like he let his teammates down in a chance to go to Sugarbowl and he needed the confidence. Idk, just a thought

TWICE in the 4th they got to within 2 TDs. our defense wasn't playing well. we needed to keep scoring and run clock, and they couldn't stop Guice. so give him the ball.

I was actually kinda surprised he didn't get 1 more carry on that 3rd down that turned out to be our last offensive play. Etling threw a deep incompletion. I'd have given it to Guice and made them burn a timeout.

Yep. If on that last drive we bench Guice and they get a quick stop, things could have gotten interesting real quick with how poorly our D played in the 4th. I'm glad we let Guice put it away and leave no doubt

It amazes me how some of you so quickly have turned on LF7. He was the messiah of this board for the last 2.5 years....adored by every single poster and fan. Never was there a negative comment about the man, ever. But the last half of this season, there has been a large number of posts questioning his character, willingness to put self before the team, questioning his ability, etc. "He's checked out" and the like. It really reminds me that this place is littered with people whos opinions are outlandish and ridiculous at times. I used to get mad... now I just smh and move on. I dont necessarily think thats happening in this thread.....just saying.

To one of the posters above, sorry bro, I love Guice (we all do) but he's not better than fournette.
