Based on the Mauck - Hester - Dickson progression, the criteria seems to be sort of non-glam, perceived hard working/tough, bleeds P&G, white guys on the offense skill positions.
Unless he breaks the race barrier, that only leaves Lee or Garrett (maybe Russian or Branch). If he does, then I think Ford is a great candidate. He's got a whole year to make this staggering decision, guys. Let's not rush the kid.

I think Dickson breaking the 18 race barrier will be as progressive an event as the election of Barack Obama

I only own one LSU jersey. I bought it for the'03 championship game. I wanted Clayton's jersey, but all they had was Mauck. It doesn't have the name on the back, so now I'm glad I got the #18 jersey.
For all of you fashion police, no I don't wear the jersey to games. I just thought it would be cool to have, and it hangs in my LSU room.

I can't remember who it was, but I remember one of our wrs (I think Byrd) saying that the number gets passed down to the best white guy on the team.

LINK
No. 18 TE Richard Dickson, 6-3, 246 from Ocean Springs HS, Ocean Springs, MS
The No. 18 is sacred at LSU. When the departing senior who wears the number leaves the school, they pass the number on to the underclass who will lead the team.
In 2003, Matt Mauck's final year wearing No. 18, he won a National Championship. Mauck passed the number to Jacob Hester. In 2007, Jacob Hester's final year wearing No. 18, he won a National Championship. Hester passed the number to Richard Dickson.

So if we don't win a NC this year, is the magic gone?
The thing is, that number isn't all that great of a football number. I was always partial to 57, 99, 69, 1. And what ever happened to 00? That was a cool number.

Dickson is a senior this year

Best case scenario:
Dickson has a season so incredible that he wins the Heisman while leading undefeated LSU to a national championship, and LSU retires #18.

Not only best case, but very realistic also. Hey, it could happen.

I'll take it a step further.
Dickson has a season so incredible that he wins the Heisman while leading undefeated LSU to a national championship, then passes it on to junior wide receiver R.J. Gillen, who in his senior year leads LSU to another national championship... and the legend continues...

If the jersey recipient always wins a national title in his senior year, wouldn't it be easier to just give it to a junior every year?

You mean after he graduates, or did he flunk out?

I'll guess Tyler Edwards
or maybe Reuben Randall freaks out this year as a true frosh and gets the honor ..or whoever blows up this year and looks like a leader of the future
I would bet an underclassman gets it judging by history, so that would disclude Murphy and some others
