Who here remembers Ben McDonald's long string on his glove?

As a kid we would try to duplicate the long leather string that Ben used on his glove. It never lasted because it would get frayed or just wasn't economical in the field. But as a pitcher, did Ben use this to blind batters or was it just simply his signature look? Reminded me of when Deion had the one strap flap on his chin strap at FSU and Atlanta.

I do, wasn't just Ben though. That was a fad. Baseball always seems to have some interesting fads

Watched him warm up in spring training somewhere near Orlando a long time ago. Never knew what that was about.

No doubt it was a fad but I'm almost positive Ben was the originator. It had to be some type of gamesmanship he used as a crafty pitcher because it varied in lengths. Like on the road he might have it hanging 6 inches (twss) to avoid an ump saying something, but at home I swear that damn thing was a foot down to his elbow
