Who had the better false narrative: Te'o or Etienne?
The whole "imaginary girlfriend who died in a car wreck-but- had-cancer" dreamed up by Manti Te'o and fostered by Notre Dame was first class.
But Etienne has his own impressive fiction about not being offered by LSU and death threats to his family. The involvement of his mother in the narrative is a nice touch, as well.

Twitter trolls (shitty as they may be toward a college kid) =/= "death threats"

The fact that there is no law enforcement acknowledgment of an even a complaint being filed is a pretty good bet.

Te'o was the most bizarre thing ever. Travis Etienne's mother's fantasies are nothing on that.

This is like comparing Drew Brees to Nathan Peterman.

It's Te'o, what are you doing here?

That and the fact that no legitimate journalist would have reported that without seeing some form of confirmation.

I was honestly kind of surprised and a little disgusted that the Clemson writer who wrote the story actually included that without asking her for a screenshot or some other form of proof that it happened.

That’s 101-level stuff, and if the journalist doesn’t know how to do his or her job correctly the editor should have nipped it in the bud.

Add in the fact that this is consistent with Dabo’s MO for motivational tactics and it makes the fact that nobody bothered to fact check the claim that much more egregious.

I can claim that Clemson fans in town for the game killed and are my dog, but if I can’t provide any confirmation that: A) Someone killed and ate my dog; and B) That that someone was a Clemson fan, there’s no way any legitimate publication should run with it.

The hatred for Etienne is so damn bizarre. The same thing happen when the kid from BR that went to UT of Austin started talking about how LSU didn't offer him and he had something to prove.

Every fanbase has it's twitter/Facebook comment ppl who take things way too far. It's not far fetched to think that people would call his family considering he's from here.

The Etienne stuff isn't in the same universe as the Te'o madness. The national sympathy created from that hoax made him one of the most decorated players ever and a Heisman runner-up.

U would be correct 5-10 years ago BUT Journalistic standards are non-existent nowadays. Anonymous sources are accepted & standard in place of verifiable proof or facts. Especially if their needed to bolster their own articles opinion.

Journalists & editors @ sports orgs like: ESPN/FSN/YAHOO/SI as well as Hard News Outlets like CNN/MSNBC/NYTimes/WaPo have gotten lazy, agenda driven & totally Biased!

Being 1st to report the story has replaced attempting to be accurate by verifying the information & vetting the 'Sources' for past discrepancies or obvious bias.

If family shows up to the Superdome (or the grocery store, or church, or Auntee Mabel’s house) without armed security, you’ll know it was false.
