What were the general thoughts on Mainieri when he was hired?

I’ve gathered that Smoke’s reception was lukewarm, but how did we receive Paul?

I was happy smoke was gone. Mainieri appeared to be good but not a big time hire.

Seems I remember he being like the third choice. A couple names everyone was up on didn't pan out and there he was. I guess more favorable than Bianco, but less than that of the bigger names floating around this time. Kinda lukewarm with a spattering of sunshine pumping.

Contingent on how “Camp Funds” would go!! Remember the rumors that Skip chose Smoke because he gave SB the camp revenues or something to that effect??

he was, and winning the NC shortly thereafter certainly helped.

I think this was a legit thing. Wasn't Skip's name on the camp at the time?

He wasn't terribly well known here, but fans knew of him and thought well of him due to his success at a traditionally non-power, northern, program in Notre Dame. Particularly the fact he had brought them to the CWS. At the time he was hired more information came out about his significant ties to Louisiana. Including the fact he actually played a year at LSU before eventually ending up at UNO and ultimately marrying a woman from Louisiana. That all led to the hire being pretty well received IIRC.

I was cautiously optimistic.

After 2009 I thought we hit the jackpot … but I’ve been mostly disappointed in the 12 years since.

PM turned out to be a high floor, middle-height ceiling hire.

Who were some of the others being considered?

Found an old article that says Tim Corbin (Vanderbilt) and John Pawlowski (College of Charleston) were both interviewed.

Mike Bianco (Ole Miss) and Jim Wells (Alabama) were 2 other names mentioned in article.

Was like who? Notre Dame plays baseball? Then I read about Skip and his buddy Demie.

This.

LSU had a better fan base when Mainieri was hired. Fans didn't whine about new hires - they supported them.

Today, no matter who LSU hires as its baseball coach, there is going to be some whining.

Yeah, that's not true at all. Perhaps your perspective is skewed due to the prevalence of social media today, but there was much whining with prior hires.

Not many were excited about the Dinardo hire. Particularly after LSU seemed to have hired Pat Sullivan...until an aborted press conference.

Likewise, there wasn't a ton of excitement about the Miles hire. At best, his reception was lukewarm

Skip was under some pressure to find the right guy after Smoke didn't work out. Honestly, I was hoping he would hire somebody like George Horton from CS Fullerton or Mike Bianco (hot name at the time), but he chose Paul. Being that he won at Notre Dame, I was ok with the hire, and was optimistic about what he could do with LSU's resources.

I remember everybody I know was disappointed we could not flip Bianco. Crazy how time changes.

Was social media even around when he was hired? I mean, that was a long time ago. Not sure how many people are going to remember how they felt about the hire.

Just like Bianco. Won't be awful, but his career doesn't indicate him being able to reach the promised land. Lord knows there's enough of it.
