What if Jack Del Rio came to LSU in 2005?

So my friend was playing golf with Jack Del Rio in Florida and Jack told him he wanted to coach LSU after Saban left. He said he would have taken the job in a heartbeat when Skip was on the runway waiting for him, but the Jags would not allow him to leave the team. However it wouldn’t surprise me if Jack might have said that stuff because he was talking to an LSU fan though. I think we made the right choice bringing in Les but how do you think LSU would be different if we went with Jack? He has a lot of close ties to Louisiana so him having taken the job was a real possibility.

I don't think LSU would have been in any better or worse shape.

He would have been fired and Saban would have come back in 2007 instead of going to Bama.

Still here but most likely 9 avg wins a year

They were at TGI Friday’s waiting for Jack and saw him sitting in the parking lot but Jack had an accident and crapped his pants and couldn’t go inside.

The only thing interesting about Jack Del Rio is his VERY cool name. Give him a handle like Robert Smith and nobody would care.

I don't know his specific contract situation but generally there's not a mechanism to stop a coach from leaving to go to college.
From what I remember it was that he was willing to interview but the Jags told him not to and I guess he didn't have a guarantee of getting the job here so didn't want to be left in the lurch like what eventually happened to that Boston College coach.

That's what was most widely reported: He wasn't assured of getting the LSU job and the Jags told him if he interviewed it was over for him in Jax. I'm not sure how he would have done. He really had never been a college coach at any level if I recall and would have no experience in recruiting. Regardless of how good a coach you are, you must have the Jimmys and Joes. He wasn't really that great at Jax.

All roads taken led to Joe, the Heisman, and 15-0. I wouldn’t change a thing.

13 National Titles and he would have played on the DL

Its no secret he wanted the LSU job not once but twice. He wife went to LSU and I think he had a couple of daughters that went to LSU.

Actually I can confirm through a family member who was part of the group that flew out to interview him that he literally was in a car that was parked in the airport parking lot waiting for the Jaguars to release him to talk to Skip and the board members. They sat there for three or four hours and were never allowed to talk to him if memory serves. They ended up just getting back on the airplane and heading home after waiting for so long.

what did they do, threaten to send Luca Brasi after him? He could have left if he wanted to but he was using LSU to get something from the Jags most likely. He's coached exclusively in the pros i see no reason to think he would have come here and stayed, probably jumps back to the pros at best

JDR was my #1 choice. Skip blew this deal. He would have come if Skip guaranteed the job which he would not do. If JDR went to interview in Orlando ; the Jag owner let it be known that he was going to fire him. He would have had a few championships. Skip B fricked him and us.

Jack Del Rio was the John Gruden of those years. Rumored every offseason but never would really considered college coaching.

That’s very similar to what I heard
