What does this hire say about LSU's status as a football program?

Before answering, what did these hires say about the status of these teams, who are all top 5 teams right now:

Bama - Price/Shula
Ohio St - Luke freaking Fickell
Michigan - Brady Hoke

And bonus points for UF hiring a coach from Colorado St with yellow teeth.

Point is, when it comes to top notch programs looking for a new coach, this board clearly loses sight of the luck factor. Bama literally lucked into Nick Saban. Not getting a big name is more a function of bad luck than the downfall of the program.

We ran into a situation where there is 1 hot name, and he's a Texas guy in the year/week that Texas fired their coach. But again, all of these elite programs just not too long ago were in similar situations hiring very meh coaches who were all pretty shitty.

It says that UT is willing to pay to be elite and LSU is not.

Hiring Ed Orgeron under the current circumstances must be views as the failure that it is. That said, winning will cure that very nicely.

Jim Tressel resigned in May.

Did you seriously expect Ohio State to hire a legitimate coach during that three month window leading up to fall camp? They had not choice but to appoint an interim for the time being.

This is frickin' stupid.

Bama - Price

Mike Price won two Pac-10 titles and had three ten-win seasons at a historically mediocre program.

He was already a head coach for 22 years when he was hired by Alabama.

Culturally speaking, the hire made little sense. But Price was a well-established coach who at least had some monumental achievements on his resume.

generally speaking, when you have to fire a coach, your program is not performing at an elite level. kind of a dumb thread

Not performing at an elite level for a time does not mean you're not an elite program. Kind of a dumb point to make.

The University of Texas is an elite college football program right now. Bama was too even after a few years of struggling. Don't kid yourself into thinking they weren't. Or else, why did Saban choose to go to Bama? Exactly

His status as elite is certainly debatable. Ed's status as mediocre is not.

It says we're happy being 7-4 and never beating Alabama ever again.

It says we think of our football program the same way we think ofor our basketball program.

Herman isn't the problem
Jimbo isn't the problem

it's the 100 or so superior options between those 2 and O that are the problem

You think if Orgeron loses 4 games every year and never beats Bama that he'll be around in 4-5 years?

Nah. But I don't think you could consider Saban elite when we hired him from MSU.

He's certainly an up and comer though.

Fair point. But don't kid yourself. Any other name than Jimbo/Herman...and I'm talking about realistic options...and this board is still in meltdown mode/the program is on the downfall mode.

Sure. He's one of us, so it's okay when he does it.
