What does “let FBS conferences determine conference championship game participants” mean?

I thought the conferences were already determining this?

Previously, conferences with at least 12 members were required to decide football champions by splitting into divisions and hosting the winners of each division in a conference championship game. However, eliminating the requirement opens the door for different schedule structures.

So does this mean the pod concept is likely to happen for the SEC?

Yep....I would guess that's the likely scenario.

With the pod concept is it possible to have 3 undefeated teams?

Depends on which cross pods you’d play. You can’t play them all nor only play undefeateds

Wellll, fat chance anybody but Gump/GA play in that game for a while...
You'll have to be undefeated. Figure: We beat Gump, Gump beats Ole Miss, Ole Miss beats us. Leaving us and Gump with one loss. (Ole Miss with more than one)
Who do you think the SEC Office would pick?
I wonder if there will be rules about taking the team with the longest absence from the game in the event of tied records among top three, also.
Dawgs aren't going to lose more than one game in the regular season for a pretty good stretch so unless they play us or Gumpland they are a real good bet to be there.

Pods are NOT the way to go. Too much potential for CG participants to be chosen and not win it on the field.

Stick with SECE and SECW with Bama/AU to SECE and Mizzou plus OU/Texass to the SECW.

My point exactly.

Makes perfect sense but no way little Nicky leaves us as Cock of the Walk in the West then have to play GA/FL in the regular season often as not.

The PAC 12 will settle their conference championship by the 2 teams with the best in conference winning percentage instead of a north versus south.

Once they expand the playoffs, the conference championship won’t mean jack just like the conf basketball tournament. Take the Bama approach to backing into the playoffs on a bye rather than risk getting bounced by the SECEast team in the SECCG

It means the NCAA is on their way out of college football

I get it.
But when you've got LSU/Bama/Georgia all with one loss the the winning percentage is going to be the same for each isn't it? So whether were talking about an East/West Championship Game or just taking the top 2 by winning percentage, it'll come out the same, won't it?
Correct me if I'm wrong somebody.

in that scenario, it would seem the winner of the LSU-Bama game would play Georgia.
But what about this: Georgia undefeated. FL/Bama with one loss. Fl only loss is to Georgia. Bama loss is to 8-4 Ole Miss. Fl is ranked higher than Bama. Wouldn't FL play Georgia for SEC champ?

It means : In the event teams with the best records having won the right to play for the conference championship don't also represent the teams that would sell the most tickets and demand the highest advertising dollar, the conference can ignore the actual results of the season and put whichever teams produce the most revenue for the conference in the championship game.

It won't be actual pods

Its going to be no divisions/3 perm opponents/9 conf games/2 teams with best winning % play in Atlanta
