Were some LSU fans not happy about recruiting Duke Riley out of JC?

Does anyone remember that? Or, am I remembering wrong?

I seem to remember on the Recruiting Board that a lot of people were not happy with offering Riley and thought he would be a bust.

He waited his turn, worked hard, kept grinding, excelled his senior year, and was a 3rd round draft pick in the NFL. My guess is that he'll be a starter for a long time and have a great career.

Congrats to Duke Riley. A true LSU Tiger that should be an example to every recruit we get.

What? No. LSU knew what they were doing. I just remember some LSU fans thinking he wouldn't be any good. He turned into one of my favorite Tigers in a while.

Happy for Duke, the kid worked his butt off to get where he is, hope he balls as a dirty bird...

Gotcha. It is hard to tell on this board.

I seem to remember him being slow played. Duke had good high school numbers but not many "high" offers and was clearly a late bloomer at LSU. Hard not to be proud of him.

I'll be honest, I thought he was likely to end up being a contributor, but a non-starting contributor.

Most of the credit goes to Duke, he put in the work every year. He steadily got faster and stronger and learned the position like a 2nd stringer. That is he has to know it better than the guy in front of him because that guy is a better athlete. And then came Aranda.

Go back and read the threads from last Summer where he was assumed to be the weak link of the defense.

He wasn't offered until the very end when we missed on other guys.

He did better than everyone thought, even the coaches.

Aranda helped a LOT. Riley even said the Dave Aranda hire was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. It was said slightly in jest, but it's obvious he knows the importance of Aranda's coaching.

I think you are remembering wrong, but I could be wrong. LSU didn't offer Duke until Jan 30th after they lost out on prospects they had rated higher. He signed his LOI on Feb 6th. LSU had no other options besides saving the scholarship.

Here's a little more on the time line with LSU and Duke. I just don't see how any LSU fans could have been upset with LSU signing Duke.

Maybe what I'm remembering is some LSU fans wanting him and other LSU fans saying that we didn't need him and he wouldn't be that good - all before January 30th. When we signed him, it seemed like some were disappointed because we missed out on others and had to "settle."

He proved the doubters wrong.

You're absolutely right. We slow played him and when we did offer many people thought he would never be more than a special teams guy.

It was a melt. The kid was a tackling machine just needed to fill out.

If I remember, it was actually the opposite. People were hoping he'd get an offer. He was actually offered right before NSD and committed on the spot.

This is the way I remember it. Duke never hid his love for LSU and his WANT for a scholarship offer.

I remember thinking "this kid won't do anything" proved me wrong. Turned out to be one of my favorite tigers.
