ok but Jefferson made all the gamechanging plays.

Too bad bama didn't have any players that could make game changing plays - well, except for their kickers.

What happened to TR in the second half?

Flashback to 2010

Anybody who watched that game should have clearly seen that the only difference in the 2 teams was Cam Newton's mobility. I dont know why yall are taking that as an insult, its a damn compliment. (besides FG kicking) but w/o Newton we wouldnt have needed a kicker

Richardson had that one carry for 24 yards in the fourth quarter. On his other 11 second-half carries he gained a total of 12 yards, which prompted the "LSU is stoning TR" comments by Verne and Gary.

No it wasn't. I hear this sort of thing all the time. What are you, eight? Do some of you really read virtually nothing? If so, that is disturbing.

Thank you, good sir. It is like you can set your watch to it. The difference in the game was Brandon Cox, Matt Jones, Chris Todd, Mitch Mustain . . . always something.

I think PSU would be happy to run some option next year.

My point is that Alabama did not lose because their kickers missed low percentage kicks.
Thank you for the analysis backing up what I already thought I knew.

Now - I know this has nothing to do with this thread however I would like some enlighten on the following:

I need (would like to have) an explanation concerning the grounding penalty.

Example 1. You have the ball on the 35 yard line 3rd and 10. You drop back and your are sacked on the 30 yd line. It is now 4th and 15 from the 30 yd. line.

Example 2. You have the ball on the 35 yard line 3rd and 10. You drop back and you are being sacked on the 30 yd line but are able to get the ball away and there is no receiver in the area or did not get the ball passed the line of scrimmage thus you are flagged for grounding. The penalty is loss of down. It is now 4th and 15 from the 30 yd. line. (Same as example 1)

Where is the penalty? Why not get rid of the ball? The referee might blow a call in which case you would have the ball 4th and 10 from the 35 yd. line rather than the 30. The only detriment I can see is the risk of being called a fumble which may be high enough not to try and dump the ball. What am I missing (besides brains and football knowledge)?

Nick Satan is such a good liar that he has lied again and convinced his team that they were the better team despite the scoreboard, and also convinced them that kicking and field position do not compute into "who is the better team."

The rule is intended to prevent QBs from getting rid of the ball when a sack is imminent.

quote:

Where is the penalty? Why not get rid of the ball?

Getting rid of the ball by throwing to an area of the field with a receiver in the vicinity is a lot easier said than done. Aimlessly tossing the ball in the air each time a QB is pressured would result in a high number of interceptions. Taking the time to scan the field, locate a receiver, and throw a pass far enough away that the defender cannot make a play on the ball, but close enough that the offensive player is considered in the area, would result in a high number of fumbles with QBs being hit when the ball is unprotected (due either to their inability to detect the hit or them not having enough time to release the ball forward before contact). The risk/reward is typically not worth taking the chance. The best case scenario is that the pass is incomplete and you do not lose yardage/the clock stops. The worst case scenario is that you lose the football with no one between the defense and your endzone. Somewhere in between is the situation you described. I believe teams now have the option to accept a penalty and may elect to have 10 seconds run off of the game clock inside of the final minute of the half. This is another reason why risk may outweigh reward.

The NFL rule is different from the NCAA rule and probably makes more sense to you given your example. The rule in the NFL is the spot of the foul OR 10 yards, whichever is greater. So in your example, the sack would result in 4th and 15 from the 30 while the intentional grounding penalty would result in 4th and 20 from the 25.

And don't forget that a QB may the throw the ball away as long he is outside of the "tackle box" and the ball crosses the line of scrimmage.
