Speed kills, and damn does Vincent have the speed to kill on the return team for LSU. We need Kary to be part of both our kick off and punt return teams, maybe we see some of that Trindon Holiday magic if he is.

Second that vote for Vincent to return kickoffs and punts but only if he can secure possession and doesn't return punts headed into or close to Endzone like some previous return men have done.....

Speed is the sixth thing I’m looking at in a punt return/kickreturn.
1. Catch the ball
2. Make quality decisions on whether to play the ball or not.
3. Ball security once caught and running.
4. Agility. Being able to make guys miss is key especially on punt returns.
5. Vision
6. Speed
Speed means nothing if you don’t have the first 5 to get into open spaces.

I agree those are all factors to consider but disagree about how you weigh speed.
A lot of college and NFL rosters have one of the fastest players on return. We had Chark on PR who ran the fastest in the combine.

Agility is a form of speed, and therefore cannot be taught. Like speed, it can be improved upon, but thats why people have floors and ceilings.
Agility has a lot to do with start up speed, stopping on a dime, cutting quickly, and laterally quickness - being able to quickly change direction. 3 cone drills usually do a good job of showing agility.
Like speed, its something you either have or dont. You can improve it some and work on it, but elite players have it or they dont. Mathieu had elite agility and only above average speed, and we see what he did with kick offs - dude was electric.

I wonder why every NFL player has a speed coach.

Of course you can teach someone the proper techniques of running to maximize your potential. So most people physically cant run a low 4s.

So you can't return a punt for a TD if you don't run 4.3? You would think Trindon would have the NCAA record for punt return TD's

all i was doing was critiquing the list of 7 things before speed.

Agility and speed is not the same.
A guy could be average speed with elite quickness and ability to stop/start (Agility). Guys like Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Alvin Kamara, etc are examples of this.
Speed is all about running in a straight line.

Hell no. We're already thin at cornerback.

I agree completely. Perhaps I didnt explain it well. I meant to say agility is a type of speed. Speed is usually considered straight line like the 40 yard dash.
Agility is how fast you start and stop, change directions, it weighs heavier on instant burst and acceleration like being shifty. My example was Tyrann Mathieu who had above average speed, but off the charts agility and vision. His speed was less important than his vision, instincts and side to side agility which made his cuts insanely good.
So, I agree with the poster that said he values other things above speed. If speed were more important than all the other traits, football teams would only recruit track stars for return specialist.
Its possible to improve some aspects of speed and agility, but you either have vision and instincts or you dont. Those cant be taught, and they are more important for sure.
