Per Brady:

quote:

Steve’s the offensive coordinator. Steve’s the play-caller. It’s just my job up there to, if I have any ideas, for him to take them and run with it if he wants. If not, keep doing what he’s doing and we’ve had a lot of success this year with Steve being a great play-caller. There’ll be times in games where he’ll say, ‘Hey look, you’ve got it.’ Or, ‘Hey, whatever you want to do here, you’ve got it.’ I think every coach is always ready, if their time comes, that they need to call a play. So, I just sit up there, and if there’s an opportunity that I have to give some advice or what I’m seeing or my thoughts — especially from the passing game standpoint — I’ll give it. Outside of that, it’s Steve’s show, and I’m just rolling with it.

Brady is awesome and brought fresh ideas to revamp the offense. He got our WRs into incredible form. He's an invaluable asset.

Steve still calls a majority of the plays.

This very well could be a product of LSU having a Heisman winning QB and FINALLY running a simple spread offense. Our athletes have always been top notch but now we are using them.

Yes it could be.

Burrow put up outrageous statistics like this in a similar offense in high school.

Anyone that's ever apprenticed a good manager could probably relate to this. It makes sense, Brady is bright but Steve has so much game experience under his belt. You don't just show up and know all the answers day 1, you may be smart but wisdom takes time.

Love the respect, deference, and plainspoken way he describes how they work together.

When I think of them calling plays up there, I always think of an instance of me picking a play in madden. It can't be THAT much different, right?

"F it, slants."

Then swap over to Blitz '99 every now and then to run "Da Bomb".

Exactly.

I know it is probably unrealistic now, but I would love their situation to remain the same for next year and give Brady one more year to learn/absorb, then let Steve retire and hire a new passing game coordinator to help Brady.

Obviously having 2 sets of eyes up there has been huge.

Maybe now people will stop dismissing E like he is just hanging out cashing a check.

I don't think it is. Brady's fingerprints are all over everything and he obviously calls a select few plays randomly, but Ensminger calls the majority of them.

We could make inferences to get this same conclusion before, but it hasn't been directly stated. This is confirmation.

Not that Brady couldn't call them if given the opportunity.

I’m picturing Steve putting a big wad of dip in and telling Joe Brady to take over for a bit

Yep

Up by a couple scores, needs to pack a lip, and take a break for a second and Brady runs the 2 minute drill and scores in 30 seconds

Yes. Of Joe’s plays. These plays didn’t exist in our playbook until Joe got here and taught E how a modern spread operates. Joe won the Broyles award for a reason.

Maybe.

The genius in the offense really isn't in the play calling, it's in the design and uber-effective implementation of the scheme.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ensminger is actually calling most of the plays. I'm pretty sure Brady has been calling them at points in games this year (perhaps for experience looking forward.) And, I'm pretty sure that Brady is going to be the guy very soon (I expect next year, but it could possibly be in 2 years).

One of the reasons he is so successful is because he is smart and he knows how to listen and learn from respected and wise coaches.

If you follow the context all year, it has been all about respecting Ensminger and how he stepped aside.

They’ve almost made the man a charity case. I know that wasn’t the intention, but this is just Joe being humble and paying his respects as a young coach. Nothing more.

Sometimes, in fact pretty often, you'll call a play to set up another play later on. You see how the defense reacts to a certain look and then file that away for later. When the time is right you might show them the same look but run something different off of it. I think that's where Steve's experience comes in. Brady has the menu; Ensminger puts the dishes together to create a meal. So I think they both are learning stuff from the other.

I don’t give a shite what anyone says, Steve did NOT do a bad job last year with this offense from a situational play calling perspective.

This year was the culmination of several factors, one of them being Brady’s input. Others were the Oline coming together, Burrow and the receivers having an offseason together, Burrow basically being able to have an NFL approach as a grad student, CEH turning into a beast, Moss, etc.

It’s a special season because everything came together almost perfectly. Credit Brady for spreading the love. Speaks volumes about the guy.
