Was the 2009 SEC title in hoops a big deal?

Looking back, I think the main sports media outlets didn’t really give a shite about that championship. LSU was slotted for the 8-9 game. Who knew that Butler was about to go to 2 straight national title games. And the UNC championship speaks for itself.

With that said...I feel like this board didn’t have the same buzz then as it does now. I was in the student section that year. I don’t think it was crapped on then like it has been recently.

Was it because it was only 3 years removed from a Final Four? Was it because the SEC was ‘down’ then?

I don’t even remember the SportShop selling shirts or anything.

To be fair, it was a bad year for the league overall. I think LSU finished the year as the only SEC team ranked and we were like 20th or something. We lost to a good but not great Moo St team in the tournament. I don't remember many people being surprised with the seed.

Marcus Thornton was awesome. We needed a real center.

CJ Johnson was good but just so fricking skinny.

The SEC was a 2-bid league that year, except MSU won the SECT.

I remember outrage by LSU fans about the 8-seed. I think most expected a 7 just to avoid the 1-seed in the next round.

Best handles of any LSU basketball player ever... yes that includes Jackson and Waters.

Worst shot of any LSU basketball player ever... yes that includes Vargas and Del Piero

One of the finest Tigers to play the pro game. He quietly had a very fine career, with a couple fantastic seasons sprinkled in.

He had a game in 2011 I think where he scored like 42 points, and was an assist away from a triple double.

He was a pure scorer though, and played almost zero defense.

The media really wanted to see that North Carolina/Oklahoma game in our bracket and we were really just a road block in North Carolina’s way on the road to that happening.

It was exciting when we took that 1 point lead over them late in that game though.

Sorry but there was this guy named Pete Maravich who had much better handles than Chris Bass among others.

My recollection is the fan base barely noticed, We didn't get a decent crowd until the last couple of home games. The SEC was really down, so badly that we won the SEC going away and could only get an 8 seed in the NCAA Tourney.

It barely registered a blip. Fans here were more interested in baseball once it started as is usual.

UNC pretty much steamrolled through that tourney, we were the only ones to give them a game.

SEC was extremely down, UK didn’t even make the tournament.

Still a very likable team with good kids. Had their weaknesses but played hard as hell and played together.

Those back to back blocks on Hansbrough followed by Spencer’s 3 was an epic sequence. After that huge run to start the 2nd half i was convinced we were gonna pull off the upset, then one of those second half droughts hit us after Thornton had tied it up at 63.
