Good video about Jay Roth arguing with Les Miles about why Jay didn't send him information on Cethan Carter. Rummel's big tight end, who played on the 2012 State championship team, ended up going to Nebraska. Les telling Jay he's obligated to contact state universities first..

He's now with the Dolphins after a stint with the Bengals.

Is it a high school coaches job to contact college head coaches?

Jay prob didn’t want him in Les’ high powered air raid offense.

Partially, yes. A good HS coach will try to help his players get noticed. But it's ultimately Les' responsibility to build a relationship with the HS coaches

I don't know how you can even ask that question with the NFL stats we have over the past 10 years.

Yes. Les miles could recruit. Players like Patrick Peterson, Jamal Adams and Leonard Fournette and Devin White are pretty damn good.

Yes. His downfall was that he struggled to develop certain positions (QB) and his game-day coaching was painful to watch. But it's hard to bitch about how Miles 'lost games despite all the talent on the roster' without acknowledging he brought that talent to LSU.

Do you think it's the responsibility of the HC to contact a potential thousands of recruits the scouting department has to put together every year? If you want a player to get noticed yes the HS coach needs to contact the university. It's easy for someone good to slip through the cracks. Scouting is not unlimited in resources. Once they're identified as someone Les wants it's Les and staff job to maintain the relationship to recruit. It's pretty simple.

And to answer your question what do you think? Les Miles fooled many great offensive recruits into coming to LSU. He was a silver tongue in recruiting, arguably just behind Saban in recruiting every year.

Les was a good recruiter but I do think that era made us underrate our recruiting potential. Sure we had top 5-10 classes and occasionally top 3 classes, but LSU is capable of being top 3 every year. Just this first year with no ties to the area yet, Kelly is about to have the highest points total class in LSU history. 2024 is looking better as well.

I know the idiot almost lost Ja'Marr Chase because he wanted to convert him to a DB..

Kinda, yes. Certainly they can make some calls to get some eyes on their players, but the head coach just wants their kid to succeed no matter what school that may be. It's not the high school coaches job to steer him to a certain school. That's the recruiters job.

You know assertions like

are easy to verify.

And please tell me you're basis for

but LSU is capable of being top 3 every year
Since LSU has never had back to back top 3 years.

This is exactly right. The HS coach may have favorite colleges, and he may know where a certain player would do well, but the college recruiter's job is to get the player to consider a certain school.

Almost all power 5 teams have huge budgets for recruiting, and when they miss on a player, it's their fault, not the HS coach's fault.

Les Miles was an amazing recruiter... He didn't always recruit to the teams needs though.

I have. LSU's most representative rank feel somewhere around 7-9.

You chart data like it helps your cause, yet you keep in the outliers and calculate the average. And you don't recognize that 03/04 (when the program was finally established), Saban had the number 3 and number 4 class. He just so happened to leave before continuing the trend.

Dispositive point. Brian Kelly will out-recruit Miles, guaranteed.

LSU recruits itself.

Even with bad years/teams, loaded with talent.

Look at the Mike Archer, Curley Hallman, etc teams. Loaded.

Les was a terrible hc and an average recruiter at best.

Les Miles was good at almost everything and a master at several.
If you must knock him, feel free to fire away with speaking with the media or recruiting 4* + out of state QB's, otherwise appreciate all those huge game victories.
