I was curious on how much walks are up this year so I pulled the stats for SEC teams.

2019: 7.30 BB/G
2020: 6.64 BB/G (covid)
2021: 7.38 BB/G
2022: 7.74 BB/G
2023: 8.71 BB/G

Looking at SEC games only, that 8.71 jumps up to 9.81 walks per game.

That is absolutely ridiculous for the #1 conference in the country. It's a shitty product to watch and embarrassing TV when the best conference in baseball is continuing to walk in game winning runs.

You can't grow the game like this. Umpiring simply has to get better

Seems there may be a concerted effort to favor the batter.

Way smaller strike zone. Pretty crazy when you go back and look at the strike calls back in the mid/late 90s.

Empirical evidence seems to suggest the conference made a concerted effort to tighten strike zones this season, for whatever reason.

Which doesn't mesh with their goal of "speeding up the game."

Between the smaller strike zone and the juiced balls no wonder the pitching is struggling. Hunt did a dive into the era numbers across the conference on On3 and I know it might feel like it’s just us struggling to get guys out but it’s not.

I’m really not that concerned with our pitching right now. It could be better but it’s been good enough so far.

They sped up the game while inducing more scoring. You can hate it if you want but the fact remains that we’re seeing more runs in less time over 9 innings. It’s working.

The problem stems from the SEC installing TrackMan in all parks. The umps are graded against TrackMan, and as such, they are very hesitant to call close pitches.

TrackMan has the umps spooked.

Wholeheartedly agree. And the SEC and officials know it. It’s a point of emphasis. The strike zone is going to be closer to what the digital video via trackman is. They get graded that way. The problem is in the implementation. They are still missing calls big time but within a smaller and more arbitrary zone. Just go trackman instead of umps. At least that would be fair.

More runs per game = more fans. There’s actual evidence of this on the NL/AL with the DH vs pitcher hitting.

Thanks for doing this. I thought about doing the deep dive a few weeks ago, but got busy.

As expected walks are up an insane amount. They really need to come down off this a little. I dont think it makes for a great product
