I’ll start with saying that this room of WRs is a massive advantage. At minimum, one of the deepest in the SEC. Solid hands & ball skills for a good majority. Nabers on 3rd down, unreal.

But Daniels… McElroy noted it perfectly last night. JD’s legs are his strength, but he has got to keep his eyes down the field when the play breaks down.

If Jaden can get this part of his mental game locked in, his upside is massive.

So many deep & intermediate throw opportunities come up during his scrambles. Tons of production gets left on the table not only from those plays, but what those plays do to stretch the field and open up other areas of the field. Must get this going before the 4th quarter.

Another consideration is that this all could be part an overly conservative Denbrock script. Overall everything looked far better last night ex. some special teams.

Daniels' tape from Arizona State shows he can throw a nice deep ball.

His problem last night was vision more than anything. He wasn't comfortable and he seems terrified of throwing an interception so he isn't driving the downfield throws. Especially when Boutte is your primary deep threat and they're putting a safety over the top on him.

I can't help but think it'll come. Nabers gives you a second deep threat, and Thomas gives you a third. Eventually the chemistry will come together.

But the biggest problem with that offense right now is that it's a play-action offense, and we don't have the play action because we haven't established a real running game yet.

The good news is you saw a little of that begin to emerge last night. By Auburn it might be ready.

And once we have the play action piece, now you'll have the one on one coverage that you can take the top off of. That's when this offense can start to gel.

I agree. Except for one part. We were only able to run the ball when they got tired. Tired being the key. We are well conditioned and State could not keep up late in the game.

Largely irrelevant.

Play action works regardless of running efficiency.

Passing opens up the run. Running doesn't open up the pass.

If they don't flinch from the play action, the play action doesn't shake defenders off the receivers.

The point of establishing a running game where this is concerned is to force a safety down into the box, and a play fake keeps him there long enough to open up some downfield throws.

State was playing two deep safeties pretty much the whole game, or at least they were every time I was paying attention to it. It's hard to get guys wide open downfield against a two-deep zone.

That’s ridiculous, SFP. An effective running game causes the LBs and DBs to bite harder on the fakes. This allows ends and WRs to get behind them in a bigger vacant area between the LBs and DBs with run support and the DBs in the deep zone.

You’re correct about the passing game opening up the run. It works both ways.

And it opens up the ability to control the clock.

If JD can get the confidence to look downfield on scrambles consistently.. LSU is a completely different offense.
